It was sunset and the light from the day were slowly fading across the horizon. The horses began to calm down and the trees rustled endlessly.Seàn took in a big breath of the fresh pre-rain air, watching as the cloudy night rolled into the town he'd once lived in. The man sat on the houses back porch, the green painted wood complementing the many flower pots and gardens around it. A soft ginger cat purred on his lap as he ran his fingers through its fur.
The cat rubbed its head against Jacks pale hands." Tammy, I'm patting you, you don't need to ask" Jack chuckled.
In response the feline meowed softly and licked his fingers as a sort of thank you.
Jack enjoyed sitting in his beach chair, watching the sun retreat and the moon rise. It was peaceful, calm. There was no need to be stressed. There were no rules to follow, there were no laws to abide.
I was just...freedom.The boy reached up and felt his bare neck. The absence of his collar felt strange. For many years head worn it, never taking it off for more then a few minutes. But now he was able to stash it away with his belongings. Not to be seen until needed.
Jack felt truly, free.
The green back door to the white home opened slightly was a creak. Jack looked back to see Mark smiling at him.
"Mind coming inside and helping with dinner?" Mark questioned, giving the boy a choice.
" I'll be in, in a minute"Jack smiled.
Mark muttered a small 'okay, and closed the door, leaving the boy alone on the porch once again.
Jack gazed down into his lap where the cat purred happily, clearly not wanting to leave. The boy smiled at the animal, he rarely got the chance to be around one, to pet one.
Now he could.Tammy, out of the corner of her eyes, spotted a bird and then jumped off of the mans lap. She sprinted across the yard and up a tree in hot pursuit.
Jack was then free to get up and go inside. Opening the green door he turned to the left as it shut. The old style kitchen was alive with food and conversation.
" And then Seàn went sprinting across the yard, his pants on his head!" Martha said.
Mark laughed full heartedly and leant back, pausing chopping vegetables.
" Ma, don't tell that story" Jack playfully complained. " I don't even know it myself".
The women smiled and looked up at her kin, a light in her eyes. She handed Seàn a peeler and some potatoes.
" If you don't mind" She said.
Jack took the metal instrument and got to work. Doing the best he could, considering he'd never done it before.
" Mark here tells me he runs a business" Martha said.
" A model?".Jack nodded.
" Yeah, I've only ever seen him pose with motorbikes though".Martha smiled.
"Do you ride?" She asked.
" I remember my brother used to".Mark put some chopped carrot into a pot and walked over to the sink to full it with water. The man chuckled.
" I hardly know how to ride a bike, let alone a motorbike" he admitted.
Martha smiled.
" Well maybe I can do you the favour of teaching you" She said.Jack let the conversation slip from his ears. His mind numbly peeling the potatoes.
Was this what life would have been if he was able to stay?
Would he still be in this small town helping his mother cook dinner?
