Chapter one: The dream
It was a hard decision to start writing this. I have always wanted to write about my experiences in Etopu but I have always just been too, well...scared, to retell my story. Yet, now, three months later I feel braver, and ready to share the experience with the world. But where should I start? All the police officers told me to start at the beginning when I they tried to piece together my mysterious coma. I suppose I should just start just before that happened. Well, I'm Emma Jane Jones or Emz for short.
I go to Riverside public school, I have a few close friends but the people who are closest to me are my two twin sisters. It was a normal Friday night when my life became...not so normal. Off course it was late, being a Friday there was no-need to wake up early the next day, and I was tipsy from being so tired.
I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and prepare for bed, just like normal, but what soon followed was anything but normal.
"Night mum and Dad, love you." I called out as I stumbled out of the bathroom, past their bedroom.
I heard them call back "Goodnight Emma."
As I approached my room I whispered half fearfully "Night Mini, night Becca" hoping my crazy sisters were asleep, but just in case they were still awake...
"Have a great night, Emzy!!!" I heard them call out at the top of their lungs. I jumped out of my skin before I quickly composed myself and entered my room, laughing in shock under my breath.
I turned my light off, closed my door, and stumbled blindly toward the big black shape ahead of me, which I knew was my bed. When I reached it, I snuggled under the warm covers and snuggled my cute toy leopard, Midnight.
I went in and out of consciousness thinking about random things like animals, lollies, fences, designer clothes and clouds. I was pretty much asleep when I heard a soft knock on the door. I gasped as I was taken away from my fantasy and was still half asleep when I stumbled blindly to my door and opened it. There, in front of me, where the two greatest people in my life.
Monique and Rebecca stood their in their matching night gowns, with matching, pleading expressions on their faces. They were holding hands and looked a bit scared and quickly rushed to hug me. They only came up to my chest so I had to bend down to kiss them and ask them what they wanted.
"Mini, Rebecca, Shouldn't you girls be in your room? Would you like me to come tuck you girls in?" I asked into their hair.
They shook there heads defiantly before Mini answered "Can we sleep with you? Please" she asked, stretching out on the please.
"Well..."
They had their hands pressed together and a pleading look in their eyes.
"Ok." I said shaking my head at my weakness.
A grin stretched over their faces as I took their hands and led them towards my bed. Using my tiny book-lamp I managed to get them snuggled into my covers with one on either side of me.
"Goodnight girls" I whispered into the darkness
"Goodnight Emzy" They giggled back. "You're the best sister in the...whole...world" Rebecca said mid-yawn
Before I knew it, they were asleep.
I waited until I knew that they were in a deep sleep before I shut my eyes. I pulled the sheets up to my chin and let my thoughts drift to a faraway place.
I was somewhere new, a place that seemed too special and advanced for my puny imagination. There in front of me was the weirdest creature I had ever seen in all of my life. It looked like a tiny bear, yet the proportions were more evened out so he did look, sort of like a rabbit.
He stood up on his hind legs, and his brown fur glistened with early morning dew. Around him, many more strange half-creatures where waking up and rejoicing the morning. Some looked scared, and some brave, some looked fear-full and some stood with a weird sense of understanding. They all went to huddle around me, and when I took a frightened step back; I almost fell onto two centaurs, the only creatures in the clearing I could give a name. On either side of me stood my sisters Rebecca and Monique with brave, yet also fearful expressions on their faces.
It took me a moment to realise they were waiting for me to talk. Fearfully I looked at Rebecca for help; she sighed and came to stand in front of me. She opened her mouth and with the wisdom of the world, bellowed out to the strange creatures in the clearing.
"Today, my dear people of Etopu, we will rise against the evilness of the wicked Queen of Darkness. When we have defeated her, the forever darkness that cascades around us will be lifted and when the good darkness of nigh falls, we shall rejoice that that the Queen will no-longer terrorise our lives. Onwards and out, my dear friends"
And then I plunged into darkness.
I felt the weirdest sensation ever, like I was falling. I felt wind rush past me, but yet, that could only be my imagination...couldn't it? Things like this don't happen when you're dreaming, don't they?
I suddenly felt a hand grab onto my wrist. I would recognise that hand anywhere. It was Rebecca and with a jolt of understanding I grabbed Monique from my other side. We all held on together and did not say a single word, not including the blood-curdling scream coming from Monique.
After a minute or so, she stopped knowing it was worthless. We continued falling for many minutes, until finally I had the courage to say something.
"Girls...are you ok?"
"No!!" They screamed at me, clutching me tightly. "But technically, if it wasn't for the fact we are falling rapidly, at the speed of light, never ceasing the speed which is the distance times the time, which by my average calculation estimates that we are soaring at a radius of the spectrum that may or may not be..."
I quickly stopped Rebecca there. "Wow when did you become so smart?" She looked at me puzzled, and I watched fascinated as amusement crept onto her face. "I will have to guess and say it's from this fall. And may I just continue, by my calculations by the radius we have turned and the..."
"Becca! Can you dumb it down a little? Please, just for all the not-so smart ones?" Mini asked devastatingly.
"Okay, okay um....Well...lets just say we will be hitting the ground with a tremendous force unless we are lucky enough to be in some sort of cyber-optimum dream state..." Mini glared at her "Okay, okay unless we are dreaming the fall won't be too pleasant! Jesh..." I didn't know whether to laugh at my wacky sisters or cry for the fact we could be hurt very soon.
And then, finally we landed...alive?
Sure, it hurt, but we kind of landed in a pool of thick water, yet we weren't wet. I felt like I was swimming in air, if that were possible.
I opened my eyes and for once in my life, I had no words...
