Eamonn Donnelly was rather enjoying himself. He and his girlfriend - Annabelle - were cuddled up on their sofa watching Annabelle's favourite movie (not that either of them were really watching......in reality, they were having a grand old snog). They had scoffed down two jumbo sized homemade popcorn boxes between them, and also enjoyed a glass of fizzy soda.
All of those now lay abandoned on the coffee table in front of the sofa as the two young adults passionately kissed each other - no other worries or concerns apart from the potentially swollen lips or hiding the evidence of the love bites from their friends later.
"Eamms, stop it" Annabelle giggled into her boyfriend's neck as he peppered her skin with kisses, his stubble tickling her collarbone.
"Give me one good reason" Eamonn retorted seductively, smirking before luring his beautiful girlfriend in for another kiss.
Everything was going wonderfully.
Until the phone rang.
Groaning, Eamonn tried to ignore the incessant shrill tone - but to no avail. Letting out a heavy sigh, unable to properly disguise his annoyance, he got up off the couch and padded over to the landline.
"Hello" he greeted into the mouthpiece, trying hard not to sound too pissed off.
"Hello, is this Eamonn?" a mildly familiar voice replied, and Eamonn frowned as he tried to place where he'd heard them before.
"Yes it is" he confirmed cautiously, shooting Annabelle a tiny frown as his confusion continued to grow. "May I ask who's calling?"
A chuckle, and then Eamonn heard the sound of a P.A. system in the background of the call - calling someone to the office - and he quickly realised who was calling.
It was his brother's school.
"Eamonn, it's Sister Imogene, the nurse at St Cuthbert's. I've been asked to contact you because your brother is unwell and needs to be picked up" the kindly voice on the other end explained, and Eamonn couldn't help but sigh once more as his suspicions were confirmed.
Checking his watch, his frown deepened when he noted the time - it was only 2pm, school would be out in an hour. Couldn't his brother wait?
Pushing his annoyance back, he nodded before assuring the Sister that he would be right down before he hung up. Grabbing his coat, he bent down to kiss Annabelle goodbye.
"Got to go, sweetheart" he whispered as he pulled back. "That was the school; poor squirt's not well and needs someone to come get him."
Annabelle gave him a sympathetic smile and squeezed his hand comfortingly.
"No trouble" she replied, leaning forward to start tidy up the mess they seemed to have created. "Go look after him - I'll still be here when you're done" she added, standing up on her tiptoes to kiss his chin.
Marveling at just how he'd managed to end up with such a wonderfully understanding woman, Eamonn pressed another kiss to her forehead before he grabbed his car keys and left, closing the front door behind him.
