CHAPTER ONE
"This is the one?" A sceptical voice broke through the silence.
"Yes, she is the one." Responded a deep, confident voice with a tone that completely contradicted the firsts. A brief silence followed, before the sound of someone clearing their throat broke through the silence.
"Well," The first voice said "she has a strong spirit, I will admit, but she is not exactly... what I anticipated."
"You doubt my judgement, Karkor?" The second voice asked sharply, sounded slightly offended.
"Well, Ariyon... It's not that I do not trust your judgement. As I'm sure you well know, I respect your decisions profoundly." The reply came, sounding slightly hesitant.
"But?" prompted the first voice, Ariyon, obviously hearing the hesitation in the others voice.
"But I must say, she is so young and inexperienced... and, well... the entire fact of what she is, of all beings on this earth you could have chosen."
"Ah, Karkor, I understand your misgivings about that... but you know that we have no other choice; any other being would surely fail... we always knew that he would take the form that we find most... distasteful." Said Ariyon with a sigh "And as for the inexperience... there are certain measures we can take to fix that."
A sharp intake of breath followed this statement. "You don't mean...?" Karkor asked, lowering his voice as if it were a terrible secret.
"Yes, I'm afraid so." Ariyon sounded solemn as she replied.
"After what happened last time...?" Karkor questioned. Another sharp intake of breath followed, although this time it was Ariyon's voice that followed it.
"We do not speak of that." Ariyon hissed quietly, fury in her voice. There was a moment of tense silence before Ariyon sighed, sounding troubled. "We only do what we must... you know this may be our only chance."
As quickly as they had come, the voices faded away.
It was a while before anything else happened. Not that Hayley could tell, or really cared. Everything was warm, like a blazing fire on a cold, stormy winter night, and the darkness was like the night sky when the moon was hidden, minus the stars. But it didn't take long before the stars began reappearing.
It was only a twinkle at first, a slither of light hinting at dawn breaking, but soon the light was winning the battle against the dark... but with the light, came the cold. Hayley wanted to go back to the warmth and dark, but the more she struggled, the more the light and cold fought back. There was barely any dark left now, and suddenly the light took over in a stunning burst of light. Hayley's vision was no better - everything had gone from completely black to completely white - but slowly the world around her began to come into focus.
"Someone call an ambulance!"
"Right, I've got a phone!"
"No, wait, she's waking up!"
"Miss, are you alright?"
People were swarming around her, worried looks plastered on their faces. Hayley sat up quickly, surprised and nervous, but regretted it instantly.
"Urrgggh." She groaned, her head swimming. Bringing her knees up to her chest, she rested her head between them, closing her eyes.
"Hey, I'm going to call the ambulance, alright?" Asked someone urgently.
