True Colours

The sky was filled with all sorts of colours.

I walked down a path surrounded by trees. Everything was multicolored. I've never seen colours before, I heard of colours but could never see them. I read books about colour but could never see them. Only shades of grey. I lived in a world of black and white. But suddenly it's filled with many vibrant colours. While walking down the path I see a man who is also admiring the colours. He is too far for me to see any of his features. There is no one else around so I decide to walk towards him. As I approach the Man the world goes dark.

I woke up.

I groaned as I sat up. Memories of the dream already fading. I can no longer remember the colours I had just seen, they faded to black and white in my memory. I got up and brushed my short black hair, at least I think it's black. My friends that can see the colours tell me it's black, but maybe they're tricking me. I got ready to go on my usual morning walk, grabbing a granola bar on my way out. At least it's something to eat. On my way out of the house my mom called me into the kitchen.

"Anything new?" my mom asked with a grin as if she was expecting something.

"Not really, why?" I ask and her smile fades.

"You haven't seen the colours yet?" she asked her tone sounding let down.

"No and I probably won't for a while," I say bluntly. My mom nods with a warm smile.

"You just haven't found the right person yet," She said in a motherly tone.

"Maybe" I say as I put on my shoes. "Bye mom!" I call out as I run out of the house.

I head to the local park with a clear river running along the side. You can see the rocks that sat at the bottom of the river. The park is small with grey grass, grey trees, grey bushes, and camping areas near the river which was grey.

As I walk down a path in the park, I try and remember my dream from earlier. Who was that man? Was he the one that would allow me to see colours? My 'true love'?

I pass by a couple admiring the trees and talking about the changing fall colours. I only see shades of grey. I can't see it but I'm told it's great!

While walking, I see a man standing at the end of the path. He's tall, slender, and lost looking. I walk over to him curious as to why he looks so lost. Did he lose his family? Maybe a pet? Many questions flowed through my mind as I decided to find out what was wrong and help him. As I got closer to him I could see the leaves in the trees burst from shades of grey to reds and yellows. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I rubbed my eyes and pinched my arm to see if it was a dream. It wasn't.

"Are you seeing this?" The man asked while looking at me astonished. I nodded and glanced around my surroundings. The leaves were beautiful shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. The sky was blue with white whispy clouds. I glance at the river and its clear water with multi coloured stones that shined at the bottom of it. I couldn't believe my eyes. The world that was once black and white, was now filled with so many vibrant colours of various shades.

The man walked over to me and gently took my hand.

"You're my true love," he said softly, clearly trying to be dramatic.

"I don't believe in true love," I told him bluntly. I was quick to notice the pure heart break in his eyes. I quickly thought of something else to say "but, we can be friends and work our way up to it?" I suggested swiftly and saw his eyes light up like a puppy dog.

"That sounds lovely" he replied.

We introduced ourselves. He told me his name was Kai and I told him mine was Ali. We laughed at the similarity between our names, only three letters.
