Red rubbed her sleepy eyes as she walked towards the kitchen. Although it was early she would often see a few of the older Inmates in the showers, however today it was empty. Red thought it strange but chose to ignore it. A CO she had never seen before pushed past her, making her loose her balance for a few brief seconds. She whispered harsh Russian words under her breath as she steadied herself before continuing her walk towards the kitchen.
Just before she entered the canteen she could hear a faint buzz of Inmates chatter. She thought it strange but didn't think much of it until she pushed the double doors open and saw a large crowd of Inmates gathered in a circle. She craned her neck to get a better look but was unsuccessful. She looked around at the crowd of Inmates and noticed Alex and Lorna near the front. Forgetting her kitchen duty's she went over to the girls in an attempt to find out what was going on. Upon getting closer she noticed tears falling from Lorna's bare face. Alex had an arm around the shorter girl. Looking up at Alex, Red noticed she also had tears forming in the corners of her green eyes.
Red reached the girls and before she could ask what was going on, her eyes caught a patch of bushy, dirty blonde hair sprawled out on the floor. Her heart stopped.
"Nicky!" She screamed pushing her way past the COs who were kneeling next to the limp body. She fell onto her knees and began to sob loudly. The COs made no attempt to move her away from the girl.
"Nicky no!" She cried, her hand subconsciously moving towards her neck to check her pulse. Nothing. She screamed, a deafening scream. It was only then that she allowed her eyes you look at her daughters body. There was dried blood covering her hair, a large gash on her forehead, her neck was bruised and her grey jumper was covered in blood.
"No!" She sobbed. She kept saying those words over, and over, and over again. Her hands clasped Nicky's pale cheeks. Red flinched at how cold they where.
"Please." She began. "Help her." Red looked around and the other ladies standing around helplessly and the COs looking at her blankly.
"This can't be it! Help her! Please!" Red looked over her shoulder when she felt a warm hand touch it. Healy. Finally someone that would help her, she thought.
"Please help her Healy. You have to do something!" Red had never sounded so desperate in her life. Healy shook his head.
"No!" There was a constant fall of tears, burning their way through her skin like acid. Healy gently pulled a kicking and screaming Red away. The rest of the family were stood in the corner, holding onto each other, sobbing.
"Please, somebody do something!" Red was screaming now, confused as to why everyone was ignoring her. She watched as paramedics dragged Nicky's body out on a stretcher.
As the minutes ticked on, Inmates and COs left. Only Red was still remained. Alex and Piper having taken a sobbing Lorna away. Red looked at the blood on the floor. Her Nicky's blood. She sank to the floor, unable to hold in any emotion. Red had never felt this way before, and she doubted she ever would again.
