*Note: Nelson is line brothers with Jalen Wilson from "Crossing All The Boundaries" (Chapter 1) and "Hooked" (Chapter 22)!
I'd made plans to move to from Detroit, MI to Philadelphia, PA for my first job in Accounting out of undergrad, and naturally, I checked with my chapter brothers to see if any my older chapter brothers lived in the city. I figured I would be able connect with those brothers once I got settled into new apartment and had been able to get into the groove with things with my new job.
Nelson Middleton (Me)
Unfortunately, my relocation turned out to be a complete nightmare. The accounting firm that I was working with mishandled my relocation reimbursement, so I couldn't immediately sign the lease. I'd fought to resolve that, only to find that my apartment still wouldn't be ready in time for me to move in. This meant that I had to find somewhere to crash for a week while my apartment complex prepared my apartment.
One of my older chapter brothers that lived in the area reached out to me via Facebook - he'd heard of the issues I were having from my Dean of Pledges and he wanted to connect us, hoping that the brother in question would let me crash with him until my spot was ready.
The older fraternity brother is Dwayne "Extreme FOURce" White, a Fall 2009 Initiate of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. He was the #4 on his line of 5 and although I knew of him via having learned our chapter's lineage while on line, I'd never met him. We'd had one conversation while I was pledging (it was a part of a test to seek knowledge from older brothers in the frat) but none of my older prophytes really knew much of him.
My chapter advisors often encouraged us younger brothers to reach out to older brothers but the few brothers that knew Dwayne personally insisted that he was known for keeping a healthy distance from the chapter. Knowing this, I still felt inclined to reach out to Dwayne. I needed to be in Philly to get situated, so hopefully whatever beef he had with the chapter didn't extend to me. So, I took the chance and looked him up on Facebook. When I found his profile, I immediately noted to myself how attractive he was. Attractive didn't do him justice - the man was fine as hell. I searched his page for any mention of the fraternity or our chapter and unfortunately, I didn't see anything. Still, I was sure I had the right guy so I shot him friend request and a message.
