When I finally came inside that next morning, I realised that my adoptive father was angry again.  I guess that maybe again isn't the right word.  He seemed to be in a perpetual state of anger.  But he had flared up from angry to furious and it was probably my fault.  I have that affect on people.

My face slipped into the same mask of indifference I always wore when I was around strangers, I guess Avarus fit into that cattegory.  He only bothered to speak to me when I did something wrong like forgetting to make sure a wayward palace gaurd was actually dead.

Figuring it best to start with some good news, to soften the edge of his anger, I presented Avarus with Cor's box.  He opened it only to rummage through it angrily.  I guess he was unhappy with whatever he saw because he threw it at the wall behind me.

I shut my eyes but refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me flinch.  "They're just jewels.  Not even unusual ones!" My lips didn't so much as twitch but let's just say I was amused by the remark.  I could barely resist reaching up to feel the cold metal bulge of the necklace under the man's shirt she was wearing or the circlet tucked inside the lining of the cloak I hadn't taken off at all during the past decade. I have no clue where they came from or what they are but I know that I can't let Avarus know about them.  I- I don't know why but I just- I just can't.   I couldn't explain it but my gut told me this secret had to remain hidden.

He went on.  "I practically delivered you straight into Cor's vault.  The treasury for Inan's sake!"  Avarus was getting angrier by the second. Can you say rage issues? Bera looked anxious.  "Of all the times we have robbed the vaults of Inan's nobles, you pick the night of the most important theft of all to completly screw up?!  What is wrong w-,"

"I think she gets it sweetheart" Bera interupted timidly.  I winced.  Big mistake.

He spun around and asked her in a dangerously calm voice I recognised all too well, "What did you just say?". I didn't like where he was going with that line of questioning so I stepped in front of her.  I rose to my full height of four feet and eleven inches and raised my head so I could look him in the eye.   Afterall, I may be tiny but I can be pretty intimidating when I want to be.

"Leave her out of this. She's done nothing wrong and neither have I." With every word my voice grew louder.  "I am sick of you complaining about the so called lousy job I did because you were not there.  You're never there to see what really happens and yet all you do is critisise!  You always want more and blame me when you dont get it but I would like you try to carry the sacks of money you want so desperately through tiny little shafts.  No, I would like to see you try to fit yourself through one of those shafts you adipem asindus victus!"

Avarus raised his hand up and brought it back down, slapping me across the face with as much force as he could muster.  And let me tell you, he's freakishly strong.  Before I could react, he grabbed a fist full of my long, copper-colored hair and rammed my head into the nearest wall.  He grabbed my shoulders and shook me.

"You will go to town.  Find out how much we are compromised and then come back. By sundown.  Do you understand me, Regina.". He pulled my chin up so I was looking right at him. I was dizzy and everything was blurred but I forced myself to hold his gaze.  I refused to allow him the satisfaction of seeing me fazed. "I said....Do. You. Understand. Me."

"Yes, father."  He looked satisfied and left the house.  A few minutes later I could hear him hitch up our horse, Carissimi, and head towards town where he worked as a jeweler, the perfect cover.  I was glad he was going because if he had stayed I probably would have done something incredibly stupid.  I had done something really stupid by standing up to Avarus. Though it did serve its purpose.  He completely forgot about Bera's infringment and focused purely on me.  The look on his face when i called him out, priceless! That was worth a minor concussion.  However, if he was taking Cari that meant I had to walk the there.

      "Perfect."
