footprints in the sand

Tears streamed from his eyes, as he tried to see through his hazy vision. He felt terrible, useless and alien. His throat burned with rage and his face was damp from all the crying. It happened again. His stepfather had one of his 'outbursts'.

He was bleeding. He felt unsafe. That was the only word he could come up with. He wasn't alone, because he had a few friends. He wasn't insecure, he had learnt to accept himself. He was just unsafe. He was unable to be himself. To be like others his age. Live a normal life. Go on dates. Have cheesy movie nights. So much for having an abusive stepfather.

His heartbeat drummed noisily in his ears, the wind ruffling up his hair. As his dark  jet black hair swayed in the wind, his sharp green eyes stared ahead. He was standing on the rocks. His feet precariously perched on the edge of the -

The waves lapped across the rocks, licking it's watery lip and leaving them glistening in the evening light.

The bottle he discarded earlier had dug too deep in his arm, leaving a jagged red line from where a few drops of blood dripped down and onto the rocks. He had pried the broken bottle from his stepfather as he was about to hit him in his drunken rage.

Now he looked at the waters below. The cavernous waves looked inviting. The dark blue depts of the ocean held a magical wisp of a solution that he needed.  Too bad he was too much a chicken to do it, he thought as he stepped back from the rocks. He could never do it. Or at least he hoped he couldn't .

Suddenly a voice called out.

'Hey, you okay?'

The boy turned back, across the rocks to look at a tall dusky guy, with earphones and wearing a purplexing look in his face.

'I saw you earlier.' it was more a question than a statement.

The boy nodded.

'Im Evan, and you are?' The boy offered his arm as he got closer.

'Caleb' The boy answered.

He flinched as he shook the other boys hand and retracted quickly, tucking his arm into the pockets of his hoodie.

The silence grew around the both of them, awkwardly.

'Well then, I gotta be on my way now. See ya around' Evan said, and as he turned around the evening sun caught his brown eyes perfectly, turning them into golden embers.

Caleb caught a whiff of his scent before he was gone, like the wind leaving no trace. He was left gawking at the place where the boy stood, but no longer.
