I was sitting on my couch, scrolling through various Instagram accounts when my mom called my name. I knew it was useless to yell back a response, so I made my way downstairs. I hated parents. It seemed like they were designed to make your life harder. Piling chores right on top of your school work, social life, and my own mental health. They would definitely be the reason that I'm ever found insane.

"Will you please do the dishes? I'm headed out to work,"

"Um yeah I guess, how late are you working tonight?" I responded. My mom was a nurse so her schedule was all over the place.

"Not sure if I'm being honest. You know how it is hun," she said as she waltzed out the door.

After watching her pull out of the driveway, I texted my friend. I know that she was going to be free, and assumed that I had at least 12 hours until my mom arrived back. She was always working the long night shifts.

I pull out my phone, and send her a message. I keep it short and sweet, getting right to the point.

Me: moms gone, you know the drill:)

She should know what I'm talking about. Lei's been my best friend since diapers.

I start on the dishes, but not before putting on music. I passed past endless amounts of stations and radios before settling down on just shuffling the 'Top 100 Hits'. Havana by Camilla Cabello came on first.

"Havana oo na na, half of my heart is in Havana oo na na"

I started dancing around to the beat before deciding that it wasn't for me. I skipped passed multiple other songs before Kiwi by Harry Styles came on. I kept it on till about halfway through, then skipped it again. There was a loud bang right when my finger hit my phone screen. I turned around to see Lei walking in.

"I love that song!! Why'd you skip it?" Lei yelled right as the song changed.

I rolled my eyes, but went back to the song anyways. Right as what's his face started singing about cigarettes, Lei joined right in. I tried my best to ignore it, but soon gave in and hummed along.

After finishing the dishes and making Lei and I some food, we headed to my movie room. The name made it sound much more extravagant than it was. It was really just a small, little room with one couch, a TV, and a wall full of movies. Hence the name, movie room.

I sat down on one end of the couch, Lei following suite, and grabbed a blanket. I flipped the television on, heading straight to YouTube. After just browsing through my recommended videos, we chose one on getting in shape. These types of videos always intrigued me, but I never honestly followed through with any of the regimes they promoted. They were only watched out of pure curiousity by us two.

Immediately after the video loaded, a video ad interrupted us. Right as it started to play, Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande filled the small room, and Lei squealed.

"I wanna see this movie so bad!! It's being released so soon too! We HAVE to go." Lei yelled right in my ear.

I turned to her with a questioning look on my face. She stared back at me, dumbfounded, and hit me on the shoulder before yelling some more.

"It's fucking After?? The fanfic I was always talking about when I was like 15?"

Lei and I had been friends for so long, we watched each other go through many fazes. She has yet to grow out of her boy band fad. We're both 21 for God's sake. I'm only living at home temporarily and then we're both getting out of here.

"Don't you think you're too old to still be into that stuff?" I questioned.

Lei looked utterly and completely offended. This made me laugh.

"What stuff? Great writing? And don't you think you're too old to be living at home? Maybe we can compromise once you stop acting like you're in highschool. You still do chores for your mom for fucks sake!"

My laugh had quickly faded, and Lei was now smirking.

"Heyyy, you know that this is only until that apartment gets back to me."

We both crack smiles.

"I know, I know," Lei replies, "lets just watch our overrated video, ok?"

"Fine." I reply, and we both turn our attention back to the TV. Our bickering had wasted away the ad time and our regularly scheduled programming was now back on.
