The Mountain

"Ugghh...how far are we gonna go?!?!"

Frisk and I have been hiking for what feels like days, though he says it's just been around 2 and a half hours.

"Just to the cliff near the top. The view up there is beautiful..." he said sighing dreamily.

"You say that as if you've already gone up there, though we aren't allowed to without a permit that we aren't old enough to receive. Have you climbed Mt. Ebott before?" I said, slyly smirking.

"Ah! ...N-NO. I-I never have!" he said quickly and nervously. I just hummed in response.

Frisk has been a bit distant ever since he started talking instead of signing, he is selectively mute of course. This may sound odd or funny, but he seemed more sociable and talkative when he signed instead of talking. I met him when we were around 10 yrs old, and now (six years later) we are almost inseparable. He would protect me from physical harm, like bullying. And I would protect him from verbal, like rumors and teasing. When I found out he was an orphan, I immediately wanted to help him as much as I could. He does so much for me, so in return, I shelter him in my apartment. My parents thought that the age 15 would be when my independence kicked in, so they found an apartment a short walking distance from my high school and look at me now! 16 years old and roommates with basically the brother I've never had nor needed!

Ah! Yes, the hike. We were really close to the top, the trees went from thin to gone, and I almost wanted to look down at how high we've gone. But thank god I didn't. Why? Oh, just when I ignored all of my instincts, and looked over the edge. And if I were to estimate how high up we were, I would say we're a few hundred- thousand feet up. Was I horrified: Yes, very much yes. Was Frisk? NOPE! He was walking around all happy-go-lucky and that shit.

"Uh...Frisk, how are you so comfortable? We're so high up! I mean, we did hike for a like long time, but still! How are you so..."

"Calm? Confident? Admirable? Handsome? Maybe even se-"

"-Definitely not that last one, that's for sure!!!!" I said jokingly cutting him off, earning a groan from Frisk and a laugh from myself.

"But seriously?! How are you not...AHH!" I squealed as Frisk picked me up bridal-style and started to carry me.

"Hey!!! Put me down I can walk on my own!"

"What? You don't like being in my comfy embrace~"

"...uhm..."

My face was so red that I could've been mistaken for a cherry, and my body tensed up in embarrassment when I heard his remark. He chuckled at the reaction, but he was right. His open was soft underneath.

"Yeah, so you're comfy. Now please put me down!"

"Alright, alright. Down ya go," he answered reluctantly, a light blush spread across his face.

After 10 or so minutes of idle chatting and walking, Frisk stopped then turned to me.

"Hey! Race you to the top!" and he bolted up the slope, with me trailing behind.

When I saw the top of the mountain, I grabbed Frisk's shoulder and pushed myself forward. And with that momentum, I roll into a ball upon landing and beat Frisk to the top.

"Annnd where are my ten bucks~?" I said while making a gesture with my hand after standing back up.

"Ugh, fine! But...how about a look at that view first?" he said smirking as he jabbed his thumb to the edge of the cliff covered with green bushes. I was confused when I saw what he was pointing to at first but understood when he lifted the branch of a low tree and ducked under it, probably crawling under the bushes to the cliff's edge. I followed suit when he peeked back at me from the bush and gestured for me to follow. After crawling through the thick green bushes and trying not get myself stabbed by some tiny rocks that seem to hate me today, I found Frisk sitting peacefully on the edge of the mountain.

"Sit with me, it's beautiful..(says something under breath)..."

"What was that last part?"

"OH! N-nothing!!"

He seemed really flustered that I noticed that part--- but he never gets flustered!!!

I wonder why...
