I knew she was a fake the moment she stepped through the front door five hours late. She wasn't my older sister Rebecca. She was something else. My little brother Jake squealed running up and hugging her. Child's naivety. That would change soon enough.
She looked just like Rebecca, but shapeshifters always make a mistake. Forget something out, make something the wrong color, or just plain out don't care. But this one seemed to have attention to detail. Long black hair which was blonde at the tips, light brown eyes, same height and weight it seems, and her messy work clothes stained with food stains from her fast food job. It even remember to put the scar on her right knuckle from a shatter window accident back in spring break last year.
Almost like her, but not quiet. Good, I was getting tired of lousy shapeshifters.
As she picked up Jake she laughed. Voice down to last detail. Almost.. She said that she decided to cover her co-workers shift for some extra money. Mom was pleased that she did it.
Rebecca picked up a child's read along book and began to read to Jake.
I stared at her for a while before getting back to work on the science fair project. A while later mom calls from the kitchen.
"Dinners ready!" She yells over the clinking of dishes as she sets the table.
I finish writing the sentence on the poster board putting the pencil besides the box of markers. I get up passing Jake and Rebecca. We all sit around the table and I whisper a quick prayer to my long gone father. As we eat she didn't. She gave the excuse that she ate during her break with a couple of her friends. Good excuse, I'll give it that.
She acted like Rebecca, looked like Rebecca. But like I said, shapeshifters always forget something. This time, I think It knew what It forget.
Rebecca's freckles. All down her face, arms and legs she had freckles. But now, just spotless skin. They always forget something after all.
I saw the hunger in It's eyes as it looked over at an unaware Jake. It was going for him first I guess.
"Blake take off your hat, it's disrespectful." Mom tells me as finishes swallowing a spoon full of mash potatoes.
"Yes, Mom" I reply as I take off the worn baseball cap off of my head. Running a hand through my messy brown hair. I hadn't take it off for a couple of days now.
After a while Mom goes to put Jake to bed. He doesn't complain today like he normally does. He ran around a bunch at the park, he could hardly finish his plate through yawning. Rebecca goes back to the study saying she needs to sort through some papers for her work.
I know what she is truly doing. Plotting her next move. To take out Jake, than me, than mom. Before we can even fight back. First she will go to Jake, take him out before he can scream. Than go to my room and quickly take me out before I can scream for mom to get out of here. Finally wait for mom to finish up removing her makeup or just burst in and take her by surprise.
Take out the weak than take out the strong.
"Hey Bro! I have something to show you!" She calls from the study as I pass by on my way to my room to put the science fair project back.
I'm a bit surprised, not by much. She must have caught my staring. Take out the suspicious first. A good plan. Under estimate it's perception. Need to stop doing that.
I grin. "Sure thing Bec! Just let me put this stuff back into my room." I respond happily.
As I put the stuff down in my room I hear my mom go back into her room to begin the long process of taking off all of the make up.
And as I walk back towards the study with my hidden knife I didn't have any doubt that it was a shapeshifter and not Rebecca.
After all if she was really was, she would have known that this kid's hair is black, not brown.
