Let go of the pain I felt so long

"My name is Hotaru Mai and I'm going to be in your class from this year. I hope you treat me well!"

I practiced this little speech for at least an hour the night before, just to hopefully make a good impression. I sat down at the seat that nobody wanted, which was as always the back seat next to the window. The school was good, I spent the first week going around teachers who taught me asking about previous knowledge and reading up on anything that they wanted me to know. I usually ate lunch alone, but one day, about a month of loneliness after transferring, this pretty girl approached me and asked if she could eat with me. She looked amazing and was very nice to me, unlike anyone I knew before. She waited for me after school and walked home with me. I was extremely happy, to the extent that my mom asked me if I took any drugs. The next few days were amazing, I became Mariko's best friend and she introduced me to the rest of the girls. In truth, I was madly in love with her and got jealous whenever she didn't talk to me, but I was so afraid that it would be like last time...

My life was taking a turn to the better, my meds for my insomnia were actually working and I actually had friends now. Days went by and soon it was summer.

The sun was setting as we walked out of the school. She caught my hand and smiled at me, to which I blushed incredibly and I felt butterflies in my stomach. The way to the place where we parted every day on our way from school was empty as always, the wind blowing the sakura petals off the trees, fluttering everywhere. "Mai-chan..." Mariko shyly said, lifting her head and looking into my eyes. "I... I love you. I don't know how you feel about me, I don't know how you feel about girls, but I love you! I really really do!" I blushed and felt like squealing and yelling HELL YES, but instead I decided to melt in my own feelings. Tears of happiness started streaming from my eyes. "Mari... I.. I'm so happy... I didn't want to tell you because I thought you would just reject me..." she leaned in and kissed me, stroking my cheek gently.

Walking home was never such a happy experience and I couldn't stop myself from singing out loud.
