The Earth hides the truth of history beneath her layers
The other vehicles were entering the drive which was the only way out. Vegetation and thick grass surrounded the house in every other direction. Sol observed the area, "I need you to make a path for our escape." he said peering at us in the rearview mirror.
What was he saying? My anxiety had risen and my heart beat in my ears.
"What do you mean?" Benin said. His voice proved steady.
"I mean," he said pointing to the thick copse of trees, "I need you to make a path to the road through there."
"What?" I said. "That's crazy! We've done nothing like that before."
"I guess this will be your first lesson." Sol winked at me in the mirror before punching his foot on the gas pedal.
"Oaf." My head bounced off the backseat. "You're insane," I yelled.
"Maybe," Sol said with a toothy grin. "Now concentrate on that path before we're crushed by those trees."
"We can do this." Benin squeezed my hand. "It's just like shifting earth in your garden."
I frowned at him. They're both crazy.
The trees were approaching and Sol seemed serious about not stopping. I took a deep breath. "Fine, let's do this."
"I like your enthusiasm, but something needs to happen now," Sol said.
I glanced at Benin; I could already hear his song.
"Focus on the trees - let them know our need for a path." I examined the trees. Our song went out as one and the trees grew still, to listen.
I sensed the approaching vehicles descending on our position and hoped Shiah and Daddy followed. A blast erupted close behind them, shaking the car.
"Focus," Sol said watching both us and the path.
The earth responded to their song. It moved like water being parted by the wind.
The trees and grass appeared to flow to the right and left, leaving a road, like brown ribbon, in the center. The path opened just in time for Sol to speed into the opening in the trees with Erben and Shiah following close behind.
"We're doing it," I said, crushing Benin's hand. Adrenaline pumped through my veins.
The other four vehicles rushed forward.
The trees moved back to their positions. A large vehicle got crushed between two trees. Another crashed into the trunk of a large tree before the other two vehicles stopped.
One more blast hit, sending chunks of dirt and grass flying. I ducked my head when a large branch thumped the top of the car.
"Concentrate," Benin said.
"Why are they shooting at us?" I yelled. "Are they trying to kill us?"
"They're trying to stop us no matter the cost," Sol said with no hint of strain in his voice.
Blast after blast hit the trees as we neared the exit to the road. The deeper we headed into the thicket the less we felt the blasts.
I looked back to see the damage caused. "They're causing her pain without a thought," I said. Anger replaced my fear.
My song changed and vines rose out of the ground and slam into one of the two vehicles. "Oh my," I said a little surprised.
The blasts stopped. "Wow." Benin stared out the back window. "Why didn't I think of that?"
