Chapter VIII - Unexpected Partner

I walked down the hall to Damien's room. The moonlight shined through his window, allowing it to roam free in the house. I saw Damien still trying to break into the flash drive.

"Damien," I stated.

Damien turned from his seat, looking at me. "I know you were in Granny's room."

"Yeah. Why did you lie to me?" I asked.

"I had to. Rose secrets have her in danger. No one can know or else they will kill her." he answered. It was a good answer, but why would telling me get her killed. "We can't talk about this."

"Why not?"

"They might be listening," he whispered. "Close the door. I walked into the room and closed the door lightly.

"I know what you're thinking, but I didn't kill Rose. I swear."

"Do you know who her friend is?" I asked, walking closer to him.

"Yeah, sure. She started to befriend my boyfriend, Steve, when she had blackmailed me. I'm sure it was to send me a message. I'm not sure what they talked about, but I do know that Steve skipped town when she died. He moved the town next to us. Whatever the secret was, held some dangerous things with it." he answered.

"Your boyfriend, Steve, was the friend? No, he can't be. Granny, said it was a girl."

"I'm not sure about her. I know her name is, Malvery, but that's all I know. Steve didn't go into much detail with who he hung out with and what they talked about and, to be honest, I never cared too much to ask."

"We need to get in touch with Steve then," I said reaching for the rusted gold knob. "I only have the letters' Steve had been writing to me. He's in hiding. He won't tell me where he is."

"He's in hiding? That's weird because Rose said the same thing in the letter I had."

"That can't be true. We saw her die in the video." Damien said rising a bit from his chair.

"Unless it was fake," I said with a pause. I looked back at the door as I saw a shadow walk pass. "Those shoes in the video--"

Damien cut me off and whispered, "It was Henry's"
