Harumi's POV-
The senate halls buzzed with anticipation as we all readied for the meeting.
This was it. If we lost this vote, the Apithians would never get the freedom the deserve.
If we lost, I could never show them who I truly am.
I fidgeted was the lace sash on my dress. Why we senators had to go through so much pain just to look 'presentable' I ad no idea.
Jitaku, my assistant, walked up to me with a stern expression on her face. "Miss Kogo, stop that at once." She said, reaching her hands to my waist.
I sighed as Jita fixed my dress. "Jita, why must I wear this dress? It's heavy and hot, we shouldn't have to put up this much of a show in the heat of summer!
Jita looked up at me, her bright blue eyes sparkling. "It is not my decision, Miss."
I smiled. Jita always showed me the respect I didn't deserve.
I looked around the hall and located my comrades.
Skylor was bothering a waiter. We had told her to wear a formal dress, and Jita had even picked out a gorgeous crimson red gown for her, yet Sora's Predestine had insisted on wearing a red leather jacket, torn jeans, and a tank top that read, 'Still Not Dead'. Her bright red hair was tied up in a high ponytail, and she phased through half the people at the party in her quest to get food.
On the opposite side of the room, Nya stood, slumped against the wall. She was on the phone with someone, arguing, and I felt sympathetic for whoever it was. Nya's perfect blue robe had become rumpled and undone, and her hair had drifted from the bun we had put it in. When she caught sight of me looking at her, she smiled and waved, then pointed at her phone. I smiled and waved back, then tried to find Pixal.
When I located her, the Android was visiting with a dignitary I recognized as the Duchess of Mizau, one of our neighboring nations. Pixal wore a silver and purple gown with sparkles and stars scattered across the tulle outer layers. Her hair was tied up in a bun and accented with a purple hibiscus flower.
"Lady Kogo?" Said a voice behind me.
I turned around to face a tall man. He wore a traditional gray suit and had perfectly trimmed hair. He looked down into me like a cat would it's prey.
"Senator Hirota." I announced, slightly bowing.
"It brings darkness to my heart, knowing that such a fair young lady takes her place in the senate. Shouldn't you be off... keeping the house?"
Hirota's hands trailed up to my neck. I placed my hand on his and moved it away. "Hirota, please. We're in a place of-"
The senator cut off my sentence by wrapping his arms around my waist. "Now Harumi...don't be afraid..."
I whimpered. "P-please... stop..."
Hirota didn't let up, only continued. I couldn't call for help.
"Senators, if I may," Said a voice out of nowhere. "Would you please pause whatever's going on here? I need a word with Senator Kogo."
Hirota growled. "Now you-"
The senator's threat was cut short by the slick sound of a blade escaping its sheath.
Hirota dropped me to the ground, running away from the mysterious threat.
The figure returned their blade to its sheath and bent down to where I lay on the ground.
"Get up." Said the person, pulling me up. It was only when I was stood up straight that I caught a good look at her.
The person was tall, and had long black hair. She had a thin face and almond colored eyes. Her skin was a warm amber brown.
"Senator Kogo." She said, slightly bowing. "I am Sayan Kairoqui, representative of the Lian Sector."
Lian was a district of the city, known for being rich in culture and criminal activities. It surprised me that such people even had a representative.
Sayan's eyes met mine. "You are the advocate for Apithians' Rights, correct?" She asked, her tone not faltering.
I blushed, thankful I was wearing enough makeup to mask the faint green glow of my Apithian markings.
"Yes, I am." I said, nodding.
Sayan smiled faintly. "Then you are who I've been looking for."
I nodded.
Sayan pressed a hand to her chest. "I Seek to aide you."
I nodded, slowly comprehending what this meant. "You will... aide me in the fight for equality?"
She nodded. "Yes. I am loyal to your cause."
I beamed, joyful emotions bursting in my chest. "Thank you!" I said. "Meet me in my office, tomorrow at noon."
Sayan smiled and bowed. "My pleasure, Senator Kogo."
I smiled as I watched  Sayan disappear into the crowd.
Maybe things would go well after all.
