The Night We Met
Music filled the club as Thomas Shelby and his brothers sat at a table in the middle of the club. Arthur joked with John as they poured themselves glasses of Whiskey. Tommy glanced around the room, always curious to see who was in his club. His thoughts were interuppted by his brothers.
'Come on Tom, have a drink. You deserve it after the race!' John held out a filled glass to his older brother. Tommy smirked and took the glass, taking a swig of the liquor. It had been a long day for the Shelby brothers, but their horse had won at Cheltenham and they were out to celebrate.
'To the races!' Arthur held his glass up in the air, his brothers joining. They threw back their drinks and slammed the glasses on the table. Tommy watched as John's eyes adverted to a young woman who walked past the table, giving him a winknas she walked by. John stumbled from the table, unable to take his eyes from the girl.
'Sorry lads, I'm just....' and with that he was gone. Arthur and Tommy chuckled as they poured themselves another drink. Tommy took another glance around the bustling room, it was good to see Arthur had succeeded in running the club. The room was filled with beautiful men and women, dancing, drinking and spending their money.
Tommy stopped his eyes moving anymore when he glanced over the dance floor to see a vision in red. There, dancing with a young man, was a beautiful woman with black hair. Her red dress hung to her figure perfectly. Tommy smirked as her eyes adverted his way as she danced. She passed a smile his way and her eyes flicked back to the man she was with. Tommy couldn't take his eyes away. She looked unlike any other woman he had met, especially in London.
'Tommy, theres a problem in the back, I'm going to go have a look,' Arthur disrupted Tommy. Tommy nodded his head and glanced up to see the woman walking back to her table, without the man she had just danced with.
Tommy was going to take the chance.
He stood from the now empty table and made his way towards the mysterious girls. He stood behand her chair and leaned low down to her ear.
'He wasn't a good dancer then?' Tommy spoke softly as he watched the woman turn to face him. He watched her lip through her red painted lips.
'Not really. I cannot stand a man who can't dance or has no personality.' She spoke with a laugh.
'Whats your name?' Tommy asked, causing the woman to widen her eyes at his almost abrutness. But she had to admit, she liked it.
'Evelyn, Evelyn Rose.' She flicked back her black hair.
'Evelyn Rose, can I buy you a drink?' Tommy asked, holding out his hand, looking at her dark brown eyes. Smiling, she took hold of Tommys hand and stood from her chair.
'Whats your name?' Evelyn asked as they ehaded towards the bar, taking note of the glances she got from other people in the club.
'Tommy, Tommy Shelby.' He replied, staring down at her ruby red lips. He placed his hand of the small of her waist as he led her towards the bar.
'Whiskey. Bottle.' Evelyn raised an eyebrow at the man in front of her as he ordered the drink. The barman placed the bottle in front of him along with two glasses. Evelyn took note that Tommy didnt pay the man for the bottle.
'Do you not pay for drinks Mr Shelby?' Evelyn asked as Tommy placed a glass in front of her. He smirked as he poured one for himself.
'Drinks are on the house. Or the house burns down.' Evelyn's eyes widened, causing Tommy to chuckle. 'Don't worry sweetheart, I own the place,' Tommy spoke up lighting up a cigarette. Tommy watched as Evelyn took a drink of the whiskey, her red lipstick staining the glass.
'And what is it you do Miss Rose?' Tommy asked as he took a drag. Evelyn blushed as she looked up at the handsome man before her. Tommy needed to know more about this girl. She was the most stunning woman he had ever laid eyes on.
'I'm a dancer,' she replied, causing him to raise an eyebrow.
'A dancer? Let me guess,' Tommy quizzed as he pointed his ciagrette towards her. 'Ballet?' Evelyn shook her head. 'Ballroom?' She shook her head again.
'I work in the club next door, maybe you should come over sometime, see what kind of dancing I really do,' Evelyn spoke flirtatiously. Tommy smirked as he put out his ciagrette.
'No private showing then?' Tommy hushed as he moved closer to the dark haired beauty. Evelyn's breathe caught in her throat as her nostrils filled with the smell of whiskey and ciagrettes. Her eyelashes fluttered up at him as she pressed a hand against his chest.
'In a hurry Mr Shelby?' She said softly.
'If you could see what i was looking at, you would be in a rush too.' Evelyn blushed at his words. But she felt herself fill with confidence as she stood on her tiptoes to whisper in his ear.
'Come see me tomorrow night, Mr Shelby,' she placed a kiss on his cheek and turned to walk out of the club. Tommy's eyes didnt leave her figure as he watched her walk away.
Things for the Shelby family were only just beginning.
