Today was Valentine's Day. To me, Single Awareness Day. Every year, I had no one. No one to be called mine. I got out of bed to get ready to go to school. Thank goodness it was Friday. The only up of today.
Even though I have no one to impress, I still want to look nice on this special day. Again, not for me, but for the couples. I don't want to ruin their day with me barging in and looking like I just woke up.
I grab my pink skirt and white ruffled blouse. I look in the mirror and sigh. I look at my light brunette hair flowing over my soulders. My hazel eyes stare at me. I grab my makeup pouch and start applying a little bit of mascara. Then I put on some lip gloss. No matter what the occasion, I will never, I say never, wear lipstick.
"Autumn," I hear the high pitched voice that is my mom.
"Yes?" I call out while putting my shoes on.
"Time to eat, you're going to be late!"
I groan and trudge down the stairs.
"What's for breakfast?" I ask sniffing the air.
"Pancakes, your favorite."
"That's not true. I have a lot of favorites."
We both laugh.
As I take my last bite, my brother walks down the stairs. He is looking exceptionally handsome this morning. His dark hair was nicely combed. His brown eyes staring intensely at me. He had a smirk on his face. I knew what that smirk meant, but I still walked right into his trap.
"Why do you look so nice?" I ask.
"It's Valentine's Day, remeber?"
There's a long pause.
"Oh that's right, you don't have anyone to celebrate with." He smirks.
I cross my arms and spit out at him. I hate him. He always teases me.
"Enough with the fighting. Time for you guys to go to school." My mom says.
"But mom! Did you see what he did?" I cry out.
"Yes, Carter you know better than that." My mom scolds.
He smirks and leaves. He calls out, "Sis, you better hurry. I'm leaving in 5.."
I rush out the door.
"4..3"
I reach the handle and send a glare his way. He just chuckles. I hop into his truck and throw my bag in the back.
The ride there was silent. The silence was broken when Carter's girlfriend called.
"Hey baby, I'll meet you in front of the rose booth kay?"
"Yah, I can't wait to see your beautiful face again." My brother says in a voice I've never heard before.
"Your making me blush, Car Car." She says over the phone.
I roll my eyes.
"Stop it, Violet, my one and only precious flower." He cooes.
My eyes couldn't be farther in my head.
"See you soon, muah."
"I can't wait!" He says back.
I hear the dial tone and take it as my cue to insult him.
"You make me sick."
"How?" He says with an innocent face.
"You're so fake. You NEVER talk like that."
