One summer day, young Demetri Goodworth was out playing in the front yard with her little brother, Gale. The time..... 2 June, 1808. The day was cool, and the grass, dewey. Demetri was teaching young Gale how to wash the clothing in the basin. 6 year old Gale was getting the hang of it, as he always did.

Demetri never had a childhood like children from the modern days. She was in charge of wringing the cloths and hanging the up to dry. She helped her mother prepare meals for the family. She had to clean out the oven with a well over-used cloth. She never attended school. Her only entertainment was Gale and the occasional rabbit. She was expected to tend to the crops and care for the chickens. She had the responsibilities of a modern-day adult, but she was only 14.

Gale was almost done with the washing, when he started to complain. It was not unusual for a young one to complain about the daily tasks. They learned to deal with these moments as that was life.

 "Demi.."

 "Gale?"

"I want to play with Gregory! He got a new basin that fits two people!"

"Well I honestly don't understand how you and Gregory would play in a basin thats used for washing."

"Yes but we can fill the basin with water! And the washing would be done simultaneously..."

"The only thing that will happen is you wasting the water and not getting anything done! The clothes will come out dirtier than they went in! You can play with Gregory another time, for now however, you must continue the washing the way I an teaching you."

 "But Demi...."

"Final is final Gale. Now, we're not done, and I expect you to finish by noon."

"But Demi I won't be doing the washing, that for the mistress to do!"

"Yes, Gale. But with your same attitude you'll never find a woman who will want too elope with yourself!"

Gale muttered something under his breath, which caused Demetri to turn. After studying her brother, she saw that he is still a young one. All he wanted was perhaps an hour of play time. And so, she did.

"Listen Gale. Let's go out to the fields for a bit yes?"

Gale agreed. The light of a child filled him up once again, and Demetri felt much better.

A couple of hours later, Demetri and Gale went out to the fields to run around. Gale had been pretending to be a warrior of the plains when they felt a rumble of 2,000 hooves. Very confused, Demetri blocked the sun with the back of her hand to look ahead, however, thats the last she'd ever see.

I was imagining myself as a great warrior, hunting the animals in my mind. I heard the rumbling too. But, I was facing away from the sun. The herd of buffalo were coming from away from the sun. Demetri was mistaken and didn't move in time. She couldn't even scream for help. I tried to warn her, I yelled her name, she didn't respond. She'll never respond.

The buffalo turned out to be a wild herd as Papa told me. Demi's body was to mangled and tangled to let her body be in view for her funeral, so Papa and other male adults are burying her as soon as possible.

Momma and Papa think I have been traumatized by the incident, but it was so.......spontaneous that I can't even remember the events well. I can't remember Demi's body. Is it scary? Yes. I love my sister. I miss my sister. I just want her back.............

It felt, strange. I thought the buffalo were in front of me. Well they were? I mean now they're in front of me, but they just...appeared. My vision is blurry, but that can just be from the dust. I can't really see Gale well, and all the sounds sound far away. I turn around and I see no one there. In fact, it's night time? Oh dear, I think Gale went back to the village and now I'm in trouble!

Demetri couldn't have been more wrong. Yes, she was dead, and now she's just a wandering spirit here on what we call Earth. The attack was so sudden that her spirit does not believe she is dead. Time passes quickly for spirits, and what was night for spirits was day for the rest of the world. What was day for spirits was night for the world.

Demetri's funeral was a solemn gathering. Demetri was known for leaving the young children to balance play and work. She helped out around the village as much as she could. She gave her portions at meal time to children who were still hungry.

She received the funeral of a comrade, and her village passed down stories of Demetri down from generation to generation to teach the kids to not go out to the fields alone. Demetri's story however, was anything but done.............
