He dropped me off with a smile and offered to take me to breakfast. I declined but he insisted.
I didn't go in the front door, I went in through my window. I didn't want to deal with my dad.
I flopped onto my bed and pressed my thumbnail into the pad of my middle finger. It was an old habit. Sometimes I did it when I was nervous but usually just when I needed to be reminded I was real.
I highly doubted people were actually people. I felt more like a book character, and not even the main character.
I was the kid in the background of a book.
I was the kid that was getting bullied before the main character steps in and saves the day.
I closed my eyes and exhaled slowly, like blowing out bubbles, before pulling off my shoes and laying back down, staring at my ceiling light.
I did that often, staring at my ceiling. It was another habit. I would get lost in the swirls of the ceiling and my mind would wander.
I sighed and rolled over on my side, grabbing my Polaroid from my side table and laying on my back, flashing a picture of the ceiling, pulling it out and setting it, and my camera, on the side table.
I sighed and squeezed my eyes shut for a second before feeling my phone vibrate.
I pulled it out to see Miles written on my screen.
He must've put in his number when I wasn't paying attention.
I swiped on his contact.
Miles: Hey.
Me: you just saw me not even 10 minutes ago.
Miles: longest 10 minutes of my life.
Me: I'm going to get a restraining order.
Miles: you just met me and you're already giving up hope on me?
Me: considering I met you because you were tryin to steal panties, there was never any hope for you.
Miles: ouch. And i wasn't trying to steal them, I was stealin them.
Me:you make me want to projectile vomit.
Miles: that's hot.
I grinned and shook my head.
Me: you're so weird.
Miles: would you rather me be bland and normal? Okay. I'll do it.
Me: normal people stress me out.
Miles: Hello, Blue.
Me: what are you doing?
Miles: I'm being normal like you want.
Me: I never said that.
Miles: it was heavily implied.
Me: was not! I said that normal people stress me out.
Miles: alot of things seem to stress you out.
Me: kind of.
Miles: tell me what. What do you stress about?
Me: you'll think I'm weird.
Miles: I already do. I'm waiting...
Me: fine. Bacteria is stessful. School. The smell of heavy cinnamon. Dog fur. Cats. Traffic. The fact my hair is black but my moms hair was blonde and my dad's is brown is stressful. Was I adopted? That's scarey.
Miles: her hair was blonde? What, did she dye it or something?
I felt my body tense as my hand trembled. I had just met this boy and felt the need to tell him my whole life story.
Me: shes dead.
Miles: my mom is dead too, if that helps. She killed herself.
Me: I'm sorry.
Miles: it's fine. She wasn't a good mom anyways. Tell me about your mom. Was she pretty? Nice? Smart?
I hesitated. Why did he seem to care so much about a kid he didn't even know 24 hours ago?
Me: she was beautiful. Golden blonde hair and the bluest eyes I have ever seen. She was smart, valedictorian of her class. She was popular and the best mom. She had a good sense of humor, she was always playing jokes on my dad. She worked as a tour guide for Earth and Space science museum.
Miles: so she liked outer space?
Me: who doesn't?
Miles: I don't. I've never stopped and looked at the moon. It's stupid. It just looks like a tiny speck.
Me: it helps if you have a telescope to look at it through. It really is pretty. Go outside and look at it now. I will.
I stood and walked to my window, leaning half out of it at I stared up. I almost forgot about Miles.
Miles: ok, I apologize, now that I stare at it i realize it's not stupid... It's dumb.
Me: you're going to be one lonely old man because of your outlook.
Miles: but for tonight, I will fall asleep under the same sky as you, as a lonely young man. Goodnight, Blue.
Me: Goodnight Miles.
