I sat on the side of the curb eating my ice cream quietly while Mekense leaned overhead against a light pole. Turned out the big boobed goddess didn't die because as we left the alleyway James and Marcus came out of the darkness and took the screaming girl away, to where? I didn't know and I honestly didn't want to know. Mekense explained a few things to me, like how drugs were essential to life in New Rack and demanding that I stop fucking up with it.
When I made the mistake of asking Mekese who her dealer was she simply said, "That's none of your business," and continued to walk in her menace like way.
"So, Mekense, got any kids?" I don't know why I asked that but it just seemed like a good icebreaker. She was pretty and pretty people didn't last long without kids when drugs were involved, might fuck up and forget there was no condom or something.
Mekense frowned and for a moment my high self thought she had read my mind, "Why would I make a child here?" she rebottled.
I furrowed my brows not seeing the problem in the question, "By the time that kid is seventeen you'll be out of here, you'll both be released back in the real world."
Mekense straightened, "Real world," she pulled away from the light post, "This is the real world dumbass, this island is as real as it gets. This actually better than your real world, with drugs being legal here every one is either too high or too wasted to kill and start a war."
The thought of telling her that she only ten minutes ago almost killed a girl and I was robbed passed through my mind but I bit my tongue. She seemed sad but not sad, it was more like she was angry or just simply tired. "Besides, no one really leaves the island, if your sentence is up and you leave what does it have for you on the mainland?" she takes a lick of her ice cream and my dick twitch a little, just a little.
"Family? Home? Sobber people?" I chuckled a little.
Mekense watches me and thought about her answer before speaking, "Family is who you trust." she laughs lightly and I couldn't help but smile, "When you grow to love a place it becomes home," She looks at me for a minute and I did the same unsure of what else to do. I didn't know if I should have taken that as a hint or a warning but her expression was stern. She looked away and finished up the last of her ice cream before throwing her empty cup to the side, "Well it has been nice talking to you, Malik."
I got up from the curb and waved to the back of Mekense. She seemed odd, not every girl saves you from dying, shoot her best friend and then buy you ice cream as a 'you're okay,' token. She was amazing and everything I needed to stay away from. She had a gun and guns weren't supposed to be in New Rack, that was a reason enough to stay clear of her.
I watched her as she disappeared into the darkness, I watched her hips sway lazily unable to help myself. I knew I needed to stay away but my mind was thinking that a little taste of her wouldn't kill me. Trusting the women of New Rack was a poison I didn't want to play with. Trusting any woman was bad for my health.
Finishing my ice cream I threw my cup to the side and headed down the street in the direction of Marshall's place. The walk was quiet and short, no one was out in the street as always. When I first came I found it a little odd that no one walked the streets at night but Marshall sat me down and explain to me that the most interesting things had to be done inside.
Parties.
Drug exchanges.
Sex.
There were too many cameras watching the street to do these things but once in a while the place might be too crowded and there would be one big sex drug party in the middle of the streets. A few crack heads ran in front of me screaming something or the other and one kid sat on the curb with a knife in hand doing lord alone knows what.
