It was such a mystery that could be solved only when the landlady told the sad story of the "wet sailor."
He was her husband, who had served on the island's lifeboat. One day, a ship was caught in a terrible storm, and the lifeboat was called out to rescue the people out there.
The rain was pouring down heavily; the waves threw the boat up and down. It was the worst storm anyone had ever known.
It was so terrible that, before the men had a chance to rescue the the ship in trouble, the life boat- hit by a wave - turned over and sank. All men, including the woman's husband, drowned.
