The night was silent and unbothered as the fire warmed my skin. The twins bodies slowly decayed in a gory scene. Their eyes burned holes into me as their beautiful faces melted away. Vampires were already dead. So even though the flames hurt beyond belief. They couldnt die again. 'Death' for us was when we ceased to exist. So, I stood there and looked into their pained eyes as they slowly vanished from this world.
"They wanted to test if you were a threat," Butch said as he chuckled to himself.
I shook my head and said," I wished that they never came."
I hated killing. Even if they did deserve it. But I had to defend my family. My heart sped up at the thought of mom and the twins being killed. It wouldn't be fair. Their soft warm bodies and frantic weak hearts. My family would never know the horrors of vampires. As long as I could help it; their lives will be long and peaceful.
Butch sat on the ground and sighed," Well, at least we will have a break for a while."
" You think so?," I asked.
He nodded and said," Human time and vampire time are different. We move slow because our life spans are so long. The next time they come for us will be in 20 years or so."
I sat down beside him and juggled his words in my head. Could I really trust that? I mean...normally the vampires would wait. But wasn't I rare?
How rare were my gifts really? Could the Vampire Council risk letting me slip from their clutches? I felt like a rare blood diamond that was discovered by criminals. Would you leave a diamond worth millions alone? Would you let a rare gem just disappear into the wind?
Nope.
I bet the council was already cooking up a scheme to make me theirs. "Twenty years seems a bit long," I said as I rest my head on his shoulder. It was growing heavy with stress. I couldn't live every second worrying if my family were okay. I didn't want Butch stressing about the vampires trying to take me. I just hated how things have been since I became a vamp.
Stress was at every turn. All I want is to spend every day with Butch. No defenseless family. No angry vampires. Just Me, him, and the rest of eternity.
His strong hand squeezed mine as he listened to my thoughts. My heart began to pound in my chest as his lips found mine. But I could not rest into his kiss.
"What if they wanted us to think they won't come for a long time? What if they are already coming for us?," I asked.
Butch sighed and looked up at the dark sky. I didn't mean to stress him out. But we couldn't relax yet. I could feel a storm approaching. Every cell in my body screamed that danger was near. And my heart was frantic as it braced itself for the attacks.
"If they are coming for you, then we need to have them lose the trail to your family," Butch said as he rocked back on his heels. Confusion settled into my mind as I tried to process his statement. In every vampire film, the evil vamps kidnapped family and friends. Its kind of common sense. If I left my family; they would die. They would use them as bait to draw me into their line of fire. So, how could Butch expect for the council to leave my family alone?
"The twins attacked my home. So I'm sure the rest will try the same thing," I argued.
Butch shook his head and said," We are very simple beings. Its a waste of time to go after humans that cant even fight back. There's also a law that protects your family. If the humans are marked by another Vamp as their property, then other vamps cant touch them. So, if you were to mark your family with a seal we could leave here and have the fight follow us."
"Then my family would be safe. Okay that will work," At least that took away some stress. But I could not bite back my curiosity as I asked," How would I mark them?"
