The time spent staring seemed to go for hours, but I wasnt complaining. I would happily throw all of my possesions into oblivion in exchange for time to stand still for that one moment. But, like all good things, it came to an end and she left to greet her friends. I had made a resolve i was going to make her mine by the end of the day or I may never see her again...
I didnt know what to do in this situation. My mouth was dry, the palms of my hands drenched in sweat and my mind somewhere on cloud nine thinking about her. I slowly went to the bench where my friend Wayne sat by himself. Wayne isn't a social outcast. nor is he smart, but he makes good plans when it comes to girls, one of which I could use.
"Hey Wayne, How's it going?" I asked.
"Good Carl, I'm doing good, got your eye on anyone currently?" said Wayne with the outback twang that I love in his voice
"Thats kind of why I'm over here actually... I was wondering if maybe I could ask a favour?"
"Sure anything for you pal"
"How can I impress a girl who I've only spoken to once and have no knowledge of?"
"Carl that's easy, make her laugh, make her remember you when your gone, make your prescense noticable and then make use of your natural talents and 'woo' her"
"Errrr... what natural talents?"
"Carl I cant do everything for you I got my eye on a girl myself ok? Work it out"
I sensed that Wayne didn't want me around anymore so I left him to his thoughts and left me to mine. I walked over to the table where the food was to grab some and there it was, all layed out: chocolates, lollies, cake, cookies, soft drink.... the list goes on and as I grabbed some chips and put them into my hand intending to eat them when I looked down. I wasnt the best looking guy in the world my chin had a twin brother, the fat under my triceps could have allowed me flight and my abs were shy to say the least. Thats when I thought that if I want this girl I'm going to have to do it fully not half baked. So I put the chips down and with them picked up my determination.
Later at the party, we started to play soccer and I honestly didnt know how to play soccer to save my life. Jane was on my team and she is incredibly athletically gifted. She was valuting over tackles with her hair dancing behind her almost as if she was being pushed foward by golden winds, passing perfectly with such elegance and scoring at exactly the right time with precision I couldnt believe my eyes I wanted her so. She was perfect in every way, and I could only trail behind and try to not look like a fool.
About 7 minutes into the second half the ball went out and and I went to retrieve it. I scooped up the ball and booted it back and as it flew through the air I couldnt believe my eyes. I somehow managed to get it caught in a tree. Wow. I couldn't bear to face her, I mean, this was just so embarrassing!
"Oh sorry I guys" I said sheepishly.
"Its cool bro just go up and grab it" announced Wayne.
"I can't" I said, frightened as I couldnt stand heights. Freaking out, I quickly made up something on the spot;
"Im not wearing any shoes" I said
FANTASTIC CARL! I thought to myself... Now she will think I'm a loser as well as a gronk and a nerd and a fatty....so good job, really good job.
"Its ok Carl I'll get it" Wayne exclaimed
Climbing the tree with expert precision Wayne jumped from branch to branch making my embarassment worse as he climbed as he too did not have any shoes. I was also worried as I thought that Jane would go for a guy like him instead of a guy like me. He retrieved the ball and quickly climbed back down the tree he then walked across the road to go swimming. Everyone followed.
As I also followed like a wolf being led by its alpha maleIi found myself next to Jane crossing the road. I summoned my courage and went for it I thought that this may be my only chance
"Jane?" I asked trying to keep my nerves at bay.
"Yes Carl? Thats your name right?" She replied in a seemingly goddess like voice
She remebered my name! I thought maybe she doesnt think I'm a complete clutz after all.
"Umm i just wanted to tell you Jane...." my throat dry with fear of what she might do or say if she would think i was stupid or something but I had to go for it no chickening out!
"Jane i just wanted to tell you...Ummmmm that I think that you are the m-most beautiful girl I have ever seen in my whole life.... and I j-just wanted to s-say that now incase we never see each other again" I said rather nervously.
She quickly turns her head away to this day I have not a clue what her facial expression there was but her next answer changed my entire outlook on life.
"Thank you Carl" she replied with a smile "that is by far the best thing anyone has ever said to me.... Dont worry we will definately keep in touch."
"Good I would like that" I replied and with that we both crossed the street. For her it might have just been a street but for me it was the start of my conquest of Janes heart.
