She used to be a normal teenager. She would listen to pop music, read books, and play outside, but when she wasn't, she would be glued to her computer, like everyone else. But, when eighth grade started, she changed. Gone was the peppy girl who spread smiles when she entered rooms and her floral dresses. The summer where she changed? Everyone called that "her storm."
"After a storm comes a calm," Matthew Henry once said. But everyone knows it isn't true. After a storm, everything is destroyed. After her storm, she dressed darker and ignored everyone. When anyone tried to talk to her, she stayed silent and avoided their eyes. Her happiness was destroyed.
No one had heard her talk all year. Everyone missed her voice. Her laugh had sounded like tinkling bells and her voice was clear and bright.
A year had passed since that summer and I wasn't able to stand it any longer. I needed to see her smile, listen to her laugh, and feel her presence one more time before I left for a different school. With trembling hands, I pulled out my phone and dialed the number I had memorized.
She wouldn't remember me. She was pretty and popular. I was just a nerd.
"Kyla? It's Liam. Liam Davis," I paused. "I know you don't remember me and you don't care what I have to say. But, I'm moving away, and I needed to tell you something."
"Yeah?" she breathed. Her voice was huskier now.
In shock that she had spoken after not talking to anyone in public for a year, I forgot what I was going to say for a moment. Remembering, I swallowed my fear and whispered, "I... I think I love you."
