Regret

It wasn't much, just a small ceremony that only few attended. He'd been regarded as one of the most bloodthirsty investigators and judged by his crazed appearance and actions, but those who knew him really knew the truth.

Driven by the death of his wife and lust for revenge on he who'd taken her, he rose through the ranks of the CCG and became a well known individual on the same level as Shinohara and Kuroiwa.

But today was not about that. Today was about remembering a friend, a coworker...a father. He'd received the highest of honors and was promoted from First Class to Special Class at his funeral, which everyone knew he deserved after all his years of service.

The eulogy was given by none other than Amon himself, with additional words being spoken by other close friends and comrades.

And thus...Kureo Mado was laid to rest.

When it was all over, Amon was the only one to remain at the gravesite. He just couldn't believe that he was gone.

If only he'd gotten there in time. If only he hadn't got distracted. If only...Eye Patch.

For so long he'd just wanted to have a conversation with the ghoul but now he only wanted his head on a silver platter, and no one was going to stop him.

"Standing there won't bring him back you know."

He turned around and found himself staring into the eyes of a beautiful blonde haired woman dressed in all black.

"I'm sorry but you are?"

"Wow, he told me all about you but never told you anything about me. I'm so hurt."

"I'm afraid I don't understand. Are you his...lover?"

The woman smiled and walked past him before placing a hand on the headstone.

"All work and no play. Barely had time for a personal life so no wonder he never had conversations like that with you...Koutarou Amon. But then again, I'm sure that even if he did he wouldn't have said anything. That's just how dad worked."

"Dad?"

"I am Rank 2 investigator Akira Mado, daughter of Kureo Mado, and partner/subordinate to the newly appointed First Class Investigator Koutarou Amon. It's a pleasure to meet you, try not to leave me to die okay?"

She spoke so sweetly but there was anger behind her words but more than that, there was a deep sadness and hatred. For him.

"I'll...do my best."

"That's all I can ask for. I shall see you in the office tomorrow. We'll be working with Kousuke Houji and Yukinori Shinohara on another joint mission."

"And that is?"

"Bringing in one Dr.Kanou. Apparently he's up to no good and gotten involved with some rather nasty characters."

"I see. Thank you Rank 2, I shall see you tomorrow."

She nodded and walked away, leaving him and his thoughts to simmer.

He turned back to the headstone and gave it a smile, "Always keeping me on my toes huh old man? I promise you that I'll watch over her. I won't fail her like I failed you. And I promise to take down those who killed you."

Amon gripped the cross he wore around his neck and looked up the sky before leaving the gravesite. He had work to do.

The next day, he entered a conference room where Akira, Houji, and Takizawa were already conversing. Seidou did not look pleased and Akira seemed to be enjoying it.

"You have something to say Takizawa?"

"Oh I have plenty to say but some of which I won't because I'm a gentleman."

"Is that why you're still single and living with your parents?"

"At least mine are still-"

"SEIDOU!!", yelled Houji. If looks could kill then right now Takizawa would've been slaughtered by now. It was like watching a naughty child getting scolded by his father and awaiting a harsh spanking.

"I...sorry..."

Akira shrugged and went about pulling out some files that contained data on one Doctor Akihiro Kanou.

"This is what we've gathered so far. Apparently our little physician has a  bit of a nasty history with the CCG. It seems that he was let go after he was found to be experimenting on humans and ghouls but disappeared before the proper authorities could apprehend him. Disappeared just like a ghost. Or so we thought."

She passed around multiple printouts of photos taken of the man from afar.

"These were taken recently outside of a hospital and parking lot. As you can see it is in fact Akihiro Kanou, but that's not the best part. The person who took these next photos over a span of three weeks. Following him everyday in disguise and going a certain distance so not to alert him. This is where the fabled doctor now lays his head."

She held up a photo of an old abandoned mansion that looked like it had definitely seen better days.

"It was owned by the late Doctor Yasuhisa, who in fact also used to work for the CCG and was partnered with Kanou. Yasuhisa and his wife were murdered by a ghoul who broke into their home and devoured them while their twin daughters watched. The girls were later enrolled into the CCG Academy alongside Suzuya here before they disappeared. That's what we have so far."

Amon looked over at Juuzou who simply gave him a smile and said nothing. He wasn't going to be any help so he looked at Shinohara next who was more than happy to oblige.

"Thank you for that Akira, I'll take it from here. As Mado stated, the girls were in fact in the same class as Juuzou here but according to him, he barely knew them and didn't even know they were gone so that lead is dead. However, what we do have is a home address. So I say we go and pay the doctor a friendly visit. Any disagreements?"

No one said anything.

"Very well, then our mission is simple.  Infiltrate and capture."

When it was over only Amon and Akira remained in complete silence.

"Mado."

"I'd like to know where you got all this information. We've been trying to gather information for the longest and have been able to turn up nothing."

"I don't kiss and tell First Class Amon."

"No but you will comply with an order from your superior."

"Heh...superior. If you really want to know then I'll tell you. Truth is I didn't gather this information but someone in one of the branch offices did. A part timer who says his friend was operated on by Kanou before he disappeared."

"Who's the part timer?"

"Hideyoshi Nagachika."
