That Saturday I had invited my girlfriend Rose to a house party Josh was throwing.

There was food, party lights, and alcohol. Yeah, yeah, I know. 'But you're only 18!' So? Kids in Germany are allowed too drink once they turn 16! So we're fine.... in Germany...

I was gonna drop Rose off after the party, but when I went to piss, she was gone when I came out. So I guess she was like, getting laid upstairs or something. But apparently, drunk me didn't see a problem with that so I didn't go looking for her.

The next morning I drove over to her place too see if she was fine.

I parked on the side of the road noticing many police vehicles.

Now I was still a little intoxicated, so I stumbled up the three small steps to the apartment building door.

Strangely, it was open wide with many people milling about inside.

I walked up to the lady at the front desk who was crumpling up mail and throwing it away in a small trash can under her desk.

"Hey Esther!" I said cheerfully. "Can I have the key to Rosie's room?" I asked holding my hand out, awaiting the cold brass to touch my warm palms. Instead of chilly metal though, I felt another warm hand close around mine.

I looked up to seeing Esther giving me a sympathetic look. I cocked my head slightly giving her a confused look. "Oh, you haven't heard yet have you?" She said a small tear threatening to fall from her eyes. "Well, you see..." Esther stuttered trying to find a way to tell me. "Rose was shot last night."
