I don’t remember ever waking up before ten in the morning on a Saturday, but I suppose there’s a first time for everything.
Besides, I want to have plenty of time to make sure I look cute for my date with Scotty. I even texted Steph the night before and asked her if she could come over and help me prep. She was more than willing to be of assistance, probably because she was hoping to hear more about Scotty.
I can only imagine her reaction when I tell her that Scotty finally asked me to be his girlfriend.
Anyway, I wake up to a sweet good morning text from Scotty, eat some breakfast and hop in the shower. Thankfully, my dad and Jessica left a note saying they’d be out running errands all day, and to have fun at the mall, the little white lie I told them the night before. Steph said she would be here between 10:30 and 11:00, so I have plenty of time to shave, blow-dry my hair, and work on picking out something to wear.
My closet is looking less than appealing, so I’m thankful when Steph arrives.
I’m still in my robe and slippers, sorting through outfit after outfit when my crazy blonde of a friend walks into my room.
"Holy jeez, it looks like your closet threw up all over the place," she says, wrinkling her nose. "Having trouble finding something to wear?"
I glare at her while tossing a ratty sweater over my head. “This is hopeless. I have nothing good to wear!”
"Relax, do you even know where you guys are going out to lunch? You shouldn’t get too dolled up, he’ll think you’re crazy. Just find something casual but cute. Like…this!"
Steph presents a sweet floral skirt and a white lace tank top. She kicks a pair of brown sandals in my direction and says, “See? This screams girly and cute but it’s not over the top. We’ll have to fix up your toes though…” Her eyes lower to my bare, scraggly, uneven toenails.
"Thanks a lot," I retort playfully.
After painting my toes a light pink, Steph gets to work on my hair. She curls it into loose, flirty waves, topping it off with my favorite pink headband and a pink bracelet. “To match your toes,” she says.
"I doubt Scotty will notice my matching accessories, but okay," I reply with a laugh.
After putting on makeup, I’m finally ready to go. I pack a couple of breath mints in my purse, just in case. I toss in my cell phone, tissues, a small bottle of perfume, and some money. Knowing Scotty, though, he’s got it all covered.
"So, now that we’ve got you all presentable, and seeing as we have twenty minutes to spare, tell me the details! How was it yesterday over Scotty’s? What was his family like? Any brothers?" Steph questions, her blue eyes sparkling with excitement and curiosity.
"Nope, no brothers. But he does have a sister, and she’s super sweet," I say. I proceed to tell Steph everything, from the way Scotty’s mom welcomed me, to Scotty singing the song he was writing, to dinner, to his sweet gestures at the door. And finally about him asking me to be his girlfriend, which resulted in a fit of squeals from my best friend.
"Do you think he’s gonna kiss you?" she asks.
I shrug my shoulders, fighting to calm the butterflies that flutter in my stomach at the mere thought. “I’m not sure.”
"Oh, please! I saw you slip in those mints. You know you want it to happen," Steph teases.
I give her a playful shove before telling her she should probably go, that Scotty will be here any minute.
"But I want to meet him!" she says with a pout.
"Another time." I gently push her towards the door and laugh as I watch her walk slowly back to her house, in hopes of catching a glimpse of my Southern prince.
