Mondays. I hate them, my friends hate them, my parents hate them, everyone hates Mondays. These are the kind of days where you think you've escaped the world for a slight moment, and then out of nowhere, it pops back into your lives, bringing you back to the harsh reality that you can never run away from it.
I groaned loudly as reality sunk in, at the same time my alarm went off, playing one of my worst songs of all time, work by Rihanna. Don't get me wrong, I love her but I can't just stand the song, reasons which are unknown to me. Anytime I hear it, I either want to throw away anything that's blasting it or I want to punch anyone playing it. Then why did I put it as my alarm, you may ask. Well, that's a story for another day.
I threw my cover away from my body, glaring at the alarm clock. I picked it up forcefully and stopped the dreadful music. I sighed, rubbing the remnant of sleep away from my eyes as I got up and made my way to the bathroom. After about fifteen minutes, I came out of the bathroom and put on my clothe, that consisting of a black fitted jeans and a v-neck grey top. Then I quickly brushed my long black hair.
I then made my way downstairs and grabbed an apple and orange juice from the fridge. The house has awfully quiet ever since my parents went away for a business trip a month ago. Sure I talk to them through Skype but its never the same. I ran my hands through my hair as I took my last bite of the apple and gulped down the juice.
Fishing out my phone from my pocket, I scrolled through my almost vacant list of contacts, spotting Samantha's name. I really needed to make more friends.
I dialed her number and she picked up on the second ring, "Oh my God, Ari! Are you okay?" Her voice blasted into the phone. Quickly, I took the phone away from my ear and frowned, rubbing it.
"If I was okay before, I'm not now. Are you trying to destroy my eardrums?"
She chuckled, "Sorry, I was just worried."
I snorted, making my way to the couch where my bag was and grabbed it, swinging it over one shoulder, "Didn't seem like it after taking off like you did yesterday."
She gasped, "You told me to run when I clearly wanted to stay with you."
"I didn't think you would actually leave me behind." I replied.
I heard a horn blast outside, "Okay, I won't leave you again. Now, I'm in front of your house so get your ass over here."
"Yeah, yeah, I'm coming." I ended the call and put the phone back into my pocket. Putting on my sneakers, I looked around the living room, hoping I didn't forget anything. My eyes landed on my camera and I quickly ran to take it and put it in my bag, sighing in relief. I don't know what I would do without my camera with me. I went out of the house, not forgetting to lock it behind me and put the key under the mat.
Skipping down the porch, I entered Sam's dark blue BMW. She immediately took off once I entered, not allowing me to close the door fully.
I turned to look at her, "Woah there Sam, don't tell me you're trying to kill me also." I joked.
"Haha, very funny," She replied dryly. She then glanced at me for a second, "Ari, I have something to tell you."
My face turned serious, "What is it?"
She hesitated for a moment, contemplating her choices. After about a minute of silence, she took a deep breath, "My step brother is back."
My face went pale. It couldn't be. I thought he went to study away from here and he wouldn't be back till we were graduating college. How come he is here, so early.
Sam looked at me with concerned eyes and quickly diverted her eyes back to driving, "He is also coming back to school."
My eyes widened at this, "H-how come? I thought he traveled out of the country and wouldn't be back for another 5 years." I tried to keep my voice firm.
"I thought so too but he changed his plans. He said he came back for his...treasure."
I closed my eyes tightly. No, I didn't want this. I didn't want to return back to my past. I didn't want to return back to him.
The car suddenly stopped and I opened my eyes. I didn't even know when we arrived at school.
Sam turned to me fully as soon as she turned off the engine, "Listen to me Ari. Nothing is going to happen, okay? I'm going to be by your side throughout. He wouldn't dare to approach you then."
Her words flew past me. She was lying. We never have the same class and she knows it too. But I always have the same class with...him. I gulped down what seemed to be my breakfast rising up.
"Come on, Ari. You have to trust me. Nothing will happen, okay?" She tried to reassure me.
I looked at her. She was trying to be a good friend but it was pointless. I managed to give her a single nod as she gave me back a weak smile.
"Come on, class is almost starting." She said as she got out of the car, me following suit.
I looked at the dreadful building. He was going to be in there. My worst nightmare is coming back to haunt me. I looked back at Sam as she looked back at me. Her eyes were unsure but she tried to cover it with a smile. She knew the truth, she knew she couldn't keep me away from him, she knew she couldn't protect me from him. No one could.
