"When do we leave to go to your settlement? Also, where do you guys live?" I asked curiously. That made all of them laugh. "We live in Forks, Washington. It's several hours from here," Carlisle said calmly. "Why were you here then?" Emmett laughed his booming laugh. "This is the first place we've been too that sells dirt bikes." I laughed along with the rest of them at that. "How soon can you be ready to leave?" Esme asked. "It'll take about ten minutes for me to pack everything. I'll leave most of the furniture with the house when I sell it, but I still have to pack my clothes and books." "I'll pack the clothes," Alice said eagerly. Renesme walked over to me, putting her hand on my arm, showing that she wants to help with the books. I smiled, and showed her that would be fine. She clapped her hands happily as I used her gift to talk.
I led Alice to my bedroom, where she despaired at my small closet, then went with Renesme to the spare room, which I called my library. There were floor to ceiling shelves along the walls, with a wall of windows on the far wall with a window seat. Esme came in as we were packing the books to help, so it only took about five minutes to pack all my books. Alice had finished packing the contents of my bedroom and bathroom, and with that we went downstairs. The others had packed the movies and game systems, and the food from the refrigerator. "I'll get my truck, and we can load the boxes on it." "You have a truck?" Bella asked. "I only saw a motorcycle out front." "The truck's in the garage," I explained as I grabbed my keys. I hopped into my white '92 Dodge Dakota and drove it around the front. I lowered the tailgate and went in to help the others bring the boxes out. There was a small trailer hitched on the back for my motorcycle, which was loaded after the boxes were all loaded and the tailgate was shut.
I opened the passenger side door so Mufasa could get in, then went back inside to finish the dinner dishes and lock the back door. When everyone was ready to go, I locked the front door, then went over to the truck, closing Mufasa's door as I went around to the driver's side. I fastened Mufasa into his travel harness, then followed the Cullens as they tore out of the driveway. We drove all night, not stopping until we reached Forks. I had already called and quit my jobs, so that end was tied up too.
We finally reached the Cullens huge white house. I followed them in, trying to look everywhere at once, causing the others to laugh. Carmen & Eleazar were staying with the Cullens for a day or so, before going back to their clan. I noticed Bella made a face at the mention of the others, and looking into her mind I saw what was bothering her. The one female, Tanya, loved Edward, and even though she was his wife and they had a daughter together, she still thought he would run off with Tanya.
"He won't leave you Bella," I said as I looked out the glass wall at the surrounding forest. The others stiffened, yet again. Why is it that everything I do sets them on edge? I turned to face them, and asked them wearily, "Ok, what did I do to shock you now? Edward is a mind reader too, so you must know mind reading is possible. He was probably going to say the same thing I did, but he didn't read her mind right away, so what's the problem?" Bella looked a little frightened as she answered, "Edward can't read my mind, the same way that Aro's & Jane's powers didn't work on me. Alice can see my future, and Jasper can use his powers on me, but no one has been able to see inside my head before." "Oh," I said, shrugging as I said, "I guess your shield doesn't work on me because I'm so odd." Bella's face lit up. "That must be it. No one else has been able to read my mind, so it's just you who is able to, because you're different."
I nodded, keeping my face in the same calm mask. Thank God none of their powers work on me. Jasper, Edward, and Alice would have been able to tell them I'm not half as indifferent to their comments about my oddness as they think I am. Out loud, I said, "Could you show me to where you would like me to build my house?" Esme nodded, and she & Carlisle told me to follow them.
Out the front door we ran, crossing a stream and running into the forest. Mufasa wouldn't stay behind, so we ran at a speed he could easily keep pace with. We ran a few miles into the woods to the left of the house, reaching a small clearing after about thirty minutes. I walked around the clearing, nodding and planning what I'd have to do. I turned to face Carlisle & Esme, smiling a real smile for the first time in hours. "This place is perfect," I told them gratefully. "I can go and get the materials I need and have this place built by tomorrow."
