don't mind the mistakes

*

It was nearly three a.m. when Luke's cellphone started to ring incessantly next to his ear. He jumped awake, causing his four-year-old daughter to stir in her sleep and wake up as well.

"Daddy?" Bea asked while rubbing her eyes. Luke turned to look at her and tried shushing her back to sleep, but that plan didn't work because the phone kept ringing.

"Shit," Luke whispered to himself before answering the phone.

"Hello?" He asked rather annoyed. Bea sat up and crawled into Luke's lap and snuggled into him. Luke wrapped his free arm around her protectively and rocked her back and forth.

"You want me to come into work right now?" Luke sighed tiredly. He rolled his eyes when his boss told him that Charles, his coworker, went home sick with the flu and nobody else could cover his shift. Luke knew this was bullshit because Charles is always trying to leave work early to hang out with his friends.

Luke worked as a CNA in the nursing home down the street, and he absolutely hated it because of his boss and coworkers. However, it pays the bills and puts food on the table, so he can't really complain much.

"Yeah, fine. I have to get a babysitter, and I'll be right there." Luke hung up the phone and hugged his daughter tightly. "I'm sorry, Bea. I have to go to work, so I'm gonna call uncle Mikey."

Bea nodded tiredly, "it's okay, daddy. Can I go back to sleep now?"

"Of course, pumpkin," Luke replied before laying her back down on the bed. "I love you."

"Love you too," Bea mumbled before drifting back to sleep. Luke was so tired and so annoyed, but he picked up his phone and dialed Michael's number.

"You better be dead or dying for waking me up at this hour," Michael answers on the last ring.

"Good morning, sunshine," Luke sarcastically replied as he quietly tried to change into his scrubs.

"Why are you calling?" Michael asked after Luke started to whisper a million swear words after stubbing his toe on his dresser.

"I just got called into work, and I'm so sorry for calling, but do you think you could watch Bea for a few hours?" Luke pleaded, but then he heard Michael sadly sigh on the line.

"You know I'd do anything for you, Luke. But my mom is really sick, and I need to stay here tonight. I'm so sorry," Michael explained.

Luke nodded his head before realizing that Michael couldn't see him. "Right, okay. That's fine. Thank you though, Mike. I hope your mom feels better."

"Hey, how about you ask your new neighbor? He seemed nice," Michael suggested.

Luke walked out of his room to retrieve everything that he needed.

"I just met him a few hours ago, Mikey. I can't just wake him up in the middle of the night and ask if he can watch my kid," Luke sighed and rubbed his face in a frustrated manner.

"It's better than you driving 30 minutes to your parents' house. Just ask him, Luke. I'm sure he'll understand. He has a kid of his own, remember?" Michael stated. "Listen, I gotta go help my mom. Just ask him, okay? Bye, Lucifer."

Luke rolled his eyes at the name before saying bye and hanging up the phone. Michael is right though. It would be easier to just ask Calum instead of driving all the way to his mom's house.

Luke sighed, again, before heading back to his room to grab Bea. He picked her up carefully before grabbing her blanket from her room and wrapping her up in it. Luke then put on his shoes, grabbed his keys, and walked out of his apartment. He crossed the hall with Bea still in his arms and knocked on Calum's door softly, but loud enough for Calum to hear it.
