The smell of bacon and pancakes filled the halls as I slowly rose from my warm bed. Saturday, life is good. I raced downstairs and snatched a piece of bacon from my dad's hands.
"Morning kiddo," my dad says, messing up my hair even more than it already is.
My mom spun around and flopped a fresh pancake on my plate. Her cooking is the best. The pancake warms the bottom of my hands through the plate. Drenching my pancake in syrup, I plop it in my mouth. I smile as the pancake warms my throat. Dad and I fight over the last piece of bacon, as always, we split it. We both clink milk glasses as we eat our bacon. Dad smiles at my mom; they're so perfect together. Sometimes I think how dad would survive if mom weren't around. I pushed the thought away and finished my breakfast. I tossed my plate in the sink and escaped back upstairs. My phone rang.
It was Stella.
"Hey guurl. Whatcha up to?" Stella asked through the phone.
"Just finished breakfast. You?"
"Marina and I were gonna head up to the park. Wanna join?"
"I don't know. I'll ask my mom. Gimme a sec." I pulled the phone away from my face and skipped down the stairs.
"Hey mom!" I yelled as I walked into the kitchen. She was finishing up on the dishes.
"Yes dear?" She said dipping her hands in the soapy water.
"Can I go hang with Marina and Stella at the park for a couple hours?"
"Sure hon. Call me when you want to leave and I'll pick you up. Dads going to work so don't bother calling him."
"Thanks mom! You're the best!" I hugged her and ran back upstairs. I pulled the phone back up to my ear.
"She said yes," I giggled into the phone. I was so excited. I haven't seen them since school ended. And there's not much of summer break left.
"Awesome! My mom will be there in a few to pick you up! See ya soon guurl. Toodles," Stella laughed.
I sat downstairs. Suddenly, the sound of knocking broke the silence around me. I walked to the door. I could see Stella smiling like a goof through the window. I opened the door and was automatically trapped in a bear hug. Stella might be my best friend, but she sure can be clingy sometimes. But that didn't matter. We both squealed with excitement and piled into the car. Off to the park!
The hot summer sun heated my face. We took shelter under a tree. It didn't take long for Marina to spot us. She giggled like an idiot as she plopped down next to us.
"Omg omg omg omg!!! I haven't seen you in sooooo long, Chrissy!!" She squealed as she wrapped her arms around me. I smiled and hugged her back. We all sat around and laughed. We talked for a while until suddenly they went dead silent. Their eyes locked on someone. I sat silent as well, mostly because I was confused and I was wondering what they were looking at. Then, suddenly, I saw it too. I felt my heart skip a beat. It was Shayne.
