Hands // Ethan Dolan ~ Part 1

You were on your way to your first day of school and was scared of going to a big class without being able to communicate with anyone.

You got out of the car once it stopped and looked up to see a tall building in front of you.

You turned back to face your mum and signed to her 'I don't want to go.'

She gave you a sad smile and signed back 'You will be fine, you'll make friends trust me.'

She kissed you goodbye as you found a teacher waiting for you outside the school.

She put out her hand and you grabbed onto it as she brought you to your classroom.

Once you entered you saw so many kids talking to each other and playing games, you didn't know if you could do that.

Suddenly the feeling of warmth from your hand disappeared as the lady dropped you before leaving to go back to her office.

As you walked in a teacher noticed you and immediately smiled and came up to you.
She signed, 'Hi Y/N, come follow me!'

She started to walk to the back of the classroom as you just followed her staring at all the other kids and wondering what they were talking about, how their voices sound, how your voice would sound.

You were not only deaf but you became mute two years ago because of all the experiences you struggled with.

The teacher stopped walking and pointed at a boy who was sitting there alone. 'His name is Ethan. Why don't you talk to him?'

You rolled your eyes as she left you behind with him. As you turned around to face him you already saw his eyes staring into yours.

"HI MY NAME IS ETHAN!" He screamed waiting for your name.

You just stood there confused at what he said and didn't know whether to sign or not.

He looked at you confused and touched you to try and figure out if you were alive.

"Hello? Do you want to play with me?" You still didn't understand him and felt bad as he frowned before becoming angry.

"IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE MY FRIEND YOU SHOULD TELL ME!" He screamed at you, you knew he screamed and felt mad at yourself as he left.

The rest of the day was you sitting alone trying to read a book while watching everyone else have fun with their friends.

At the end of the day, you were waiting with Ethan for your mum to come pick you up. Ethan was still not talking to you.

After a few minutes, your mum and Ethan's mum came upstairs to bring you back home.

'How was today?' Your mum signed with you as you were relieved that you could sign for the rest of the day.

'It was awful, I think I messed up with Ethan.' You pointed at Ethan as he looked at your hand movements confused.

Your parents both waved at each other before you left school.

Ethan was now home and was confused as to what Y/N was doing with her hands and why she wouldn't talk to him.

"Mum, do you know what happened to Y/N? She didn't want to play with me at all and she doesn't speak." Ethan asked her mum.

"She's deaf honey, that means she can't hear you." He immediately felt bad as he screamed at you without knowing you couldn't understand him.

"Is there a way I can talk to her? What were those hand movements?" Ethan's mum smiled knowing that Ethan had a good heart.

"She uses her hands to communicate, it's called sign language. I can give you some books if you'd like?" Ethan nodded his head enthusiastically excited to finally talk to you tomorrow.

The next day when you arrived at school you went straight to your seat and started colouring trying to ignore everyone else.

After a few minutes Ethan came in front of you and you were waiting for him to scream at you again.

But instead he signed, 'Hi, my name is Wrhan. I'm sorry for screaming at you.' You laughed as he signed his name incorrectly but was shocked that he was communicating with you.

You decided to write on paper as he couldn't understand sign completely.

'You spelt your name incorrectly it's like this.' You made the right gestures as Ethan copied you.

The rest of the day you and Ethan communicated and you taught him some new words that could make your time together even better.

From then onwards you and Ethan became close and you finally found a real friend.
