Our House; In the Middle of Our Street
GryffinPuff, Ravendor, Hufflin or Slytherclaw?Choosing a house for your OC is always fun.
Let's create a scenario to visualise.
So Draco Malfoy has a twin sister and she arrives at Hogwarts to be sorted into her house along with her brother. Malfoy, of course, is called into Slytherin. Your OC steps up to the plate straight after her twin, while everyone watches on eagerly. Now for the fork in the road!
The Conventional: "Slytherin!" The sorting hat yells to her delight/horror/relief.
The Surprising: "Hufflepuff!" The sorting hat yells to her horror/relief/delight.
The element of surprise is always fun. But remember; what do you want to do with your OC? Are they wild and ready to break the rules? Or are they content with who they are? Whatever they do; make it fun.
Take me Home
Let's Discuss the Houses, shall we?
(Heads of Houses mentioned are for the Golden Trio era only)1. Gryffindor
Stereotypes: Brave, think they run the world, basically bloody fearless.
Head of House: Minerva McGonagall
Notable alumni: Harry Potter, Albus DumbledoreThis is the most talked about house in fan fictions; probably because that's where the Chosen One ends up it's the place to be, okay?
So naturally, Lucy Snape from the Lucy Snape series ends up in Gryffindor.
Why? It's the element of surprise! Snape adopts her and wants her in Slytherin so I had to keep things interesting. Keep everyone guessing, y'all.
2. Slytherin
Stereotypes: Mean, will probably cut you, can talk to snakes (because they are snakes)
Head of House: Severus Snape
Notable alumni: Tom Riddle, Draco MalfoyMind if I —
Slyther-in?So no doubt unless you think Slytherin is the bees knees, you think this house is terrible. No worries, go and destroy those stereotypes. Your OC might be a goody two shoes and end up there — later on they might be a death eater. Plan ahead.
Matt Jarvin from the Lucy Snape series ends up in Slytherin because he's cunning. He's a right pain in the ass to start with but then proves he's not and yet his daring nature makes him a true Slytherin — in a good way!
3. Hufflepuff
Stereotypes: Dumb, finders, puff puff
Head of House: Pomona Sprout
Notable alumni: Cedric Diggory, Nymphadora TonksWhat the hell is a Hufflepuff?
You decide for yourself. This is probably the most underrated house EVER. So if you want your OC to join the badgers the road is yours because even I am not quite sure what Hufflepuff's do.
I guess you'd better —
Find one.
AHAHA!!
4. Ravenclaw
Stereotypes: Intelligent, you can't ask them to the Yule ball, have you actually ever seen a Ravenclaw?
Head of House: Filius Flitwick
Notable alumni: Luna Lovegood, Cho ChangI literally know less about Ravenclaws than I do about Hufflepuff's. So why don't you have a character who's not very intelligent end up here? Sort of like Neville, far from brave, proves us all wrong.
Alternatively if you want someone super smart to end up here: do as you please. Ben Truman from the Lucy Snape series joins Ravenclaw because he's hitting the books every five minutes, don't feel bad for placing your OCs where you think they should go.
And that's it! Alternatively, check out Pottermore and the Harry Potter Wiki for some more detail. No doubt you'll find some more detail there for one of the lesser known houses.
