Chapter One: Not An Angel
Okay, so, maybe I don't exactly know how I ended up in the same room as three other girls. I don't exactly get why this specific girl with honey brown hair is staring daggers in a bittersweet way and why I can't seem to shake off her gaze. I don't really know anything even though my sister said I know too damn much. I think she's right. She's always right.
"Who are you?" A soft mellow tone cuts through the silence while I balance on one leg then switch.
"The question is, who are you?" I push up my shades, a hearty chuckle escaping the glossy lips of the girl who's far too curious.
"I like you. I'm Sydney."
I look up from the smudged areas of my sneakers. The marker beginning to fade from being worn for far too long and rough treatment. Her sudden specks of caramel in her grey eyes are startling, but they compliment her red velvet locks.
"Rayne."
"Like rain?" I expected her voice to be bitchy and snappy. Something like a track on repeat and it won't stop till you slam it down. Yet, it's laced with honey like her hair and ends on a soft note like a gentle piano.
"Yes, the most common form of precipitation in jungles," I avoid her sharp clear blues and turn to the brunette who has a bubbly aura and a beaming smile.
Who knew these girls would look like normal teens, but have quirks that a mutant or superhero would have. Then again, I can't say much when I'm more or less the same.
"I'm Jean. Nice to meet you, Rayne." The girl by Jean sticks her hand out to me in a natural manner and I can't seem to ignore her as my hand extends to meet hers in a firm shake.
"Do you really shake hands with everyone, bubbly?" Sydney asks and raises her brow at the brunette with forest orbs.
"It's a strategy," Jean shrugs and backs away into her corner.
"To what? Lure everyone into your irresistible charm?" I might as well keep my eyes on her because I just can't stop noticing the little details of dark blue surrounding her pupils, the natural streaks of dark brown hovering over her eyes.
During the time I observe every inch of them, memorize their tones and pitches from responses and get their image memorized, honey hair girl cuts my thoughts short.
"You wear shades to hide the changing of your eye color, don't you?"
"You ask a lot of questions for someone who knows them already," I turn to her and shove my hands in the depth of my pockets.
I still don't know her name. I practically know everyone's whole entire attitude and all their scents are strong along with their rising voices filling my ears. No matter what I do, it's either their voice that catches my full attention, their perfume and home scent, their stunning looks or the occasional feel of their warm skin as we're cramped in an art supplies closet.
"What's your name anyways, honey hair?" I ask and tilt my head.
"I'll tell you if you show us that cool thing with your eye color," she crosses her arms across her chest.
I glance at the others and see wide smiles and curious killing eyes.
"Fine."
Honey girl's eyes widen, Sydney gapes slightly and Jean looks like she just won the whole world as she smiles wider than before.
"It's like, a galaxy of stars," Jean observes.
"Yeah, with fucking rainbows," Sydney adds with raised eye brows.
"That's amazing."
"So, name?" I pull my sunglasses back on and stare back down to the comfort of the ground.
"Arielle."
And somehow, I knew these girls wouldn't just be someone I pass in the hallways or in the yearbook. They're going to turn my life upside down and up like a light switch and bring hell on Earth to me personally. But I didn't mind. I don't think I ever could. I mean, people are talking to me. No one ever makes time to do that unless if they're my family.
Don't get me started on Arielle. If looks could kill, then she'd be the perfect culprit. She's gorgeous and sickeningly venomous. God, she's poison in a bottle of innocent sweet honey. How ironic that her hair matches. It's lucky I know she's not an angel because I'm sure others are being fooled by the devil themselves.
