I sat on the mattress in the middle of my dinning room as my grandmother walked around. She was in aww. She would put her hand to her mouth and mumble something I couldn't hear. I just smiled at her. I don't think I've ever been so peaceful as I am in this moment.
She slowly lowered herself to the floor as she sat against the wall opposite of where I am.
"How did you get it?"
I smiled.
"I went house shopping and found it."
She shook her head no at me. As if I was a young child that got into wet paint. She started to laugh at me. A quiet elegant laugh. The soft laughter being very welcoming.
"I remember you would run down those stairs as you went to school."
Her eyes glossing over with eaither memories or tears. I don't know which. Her finger running along the stair case in mid air.
"Oh and your handprints when we got the porch redone. "
She jumped up a little in excitement. But her face took a turn for the worse. I quickly shot my hand to hers and folded our fingers together. Bringing her hand to my heart and kissing it. I look into my grandmother's eyes.
"Grandma, do you want to move in with me?"
She shook her head once more.
"Why? Why all the change? This house brings back so many happy memories and yet so many sad ones as well. So many people died here. Your grandfather, your.... that was my fault. I should have watched more carefully. I'm sorry Jessica. I really am. You don't know how much it haunts me very day of my life."
I rub my finger over her hand. Comforting her and myself.
"Grandma, it wasn't your fault she died. It was a natural cause. Cancer gets every living thing."
My mind went back to that little creature. It had do much hair. It was soft too. I loved to brush it. Tears sting my eyes fighting for escape. Tumbling over each other. I held it back.
"But grandma, will you consider moving in. I would love it if you did."
She nodded her head when I heard a knock on the door. I got up and my grandma followed suite.
"I better get going anyway. I have things to do. Book club. I'm hosting it today. I'll see you later my parakeet."
She gave a kiss to my forehead and left through the door. I made my way there to find a Liam waving goodbye to my grandma. I raise one eyebrow looking him up and down. Worn jeans, a flannel button up and work boots. He had a tool belt wrapped around his waist hanging due to the tools on it.
"I know I'm hot, but.you don't have to stare. I feel violated."
I roll my eyes at his very poor acting skills. I pushed him back then walked back in the house. Liam following close.
"May I help you sir?"
Liam put his arms on his hips and leaned forward on his toes then back on his heels. Repeating the process while we spoke.
"Well I'm here to put furniture together."
My eyes widened looking at the boxes I had received earlier in the day.
"One, how did you know where I lived. And two how did you know I was putting furniture together?"
He gave me a face that spoke his words for him. I already knew the answer now. I sighed.
"Clare. Why did I even ask."
I slapped my hand to my head. I looked up at hikm and waved a hand for him to follow. A little later he got working on my dinning table and chairs. I was working on the living room t.v. stand. I heard a scratching at the door. I heard it last night too but didn't think anything of it. But this time I got up and looked out the window. It was puppy. A small little red retriever. I opened the heavy door and started at it from the screen door in front of me. It was dirty and tattered. It was to thin to be owned by anyone. No dog tags or evidence that it had a home. I slowly made my way to the poor pup and let it sniff my hand before scooping it in my arms. All the fat that it actually had was just fur. It made a twitch ache in my heart. I walked back into the living room and set the poor thing on my couch. Stuffed 3 fuzzy blankets around it and left for the kitchen. I sighed.
"HEY LIAM!"
I yelled, hoping he would cone to me. But he didn't.
"WHAT!"
He yelled back. Muffled probably by a tool hanging from his mouth. He had a bad habit of chewing on things. I walked to the dinning room and saw him under the table. He slid forward and popped his head out from the side.
"Yes me lady?"
A goofy grin plastered all over his face.
"I'm running out for a second. Do you need anything?"
He thought. Making a strange face. Almost as if he was actually thinking.
"Nope. I'm good. How long you wanna be gone?"
"Just to the store and back. Maybe a pizza."
He nodded his head and went back under. I went to the living room graves my purse, cell, and keys. Scooped up the puppy once more and made my way to pet smart.
"I can't find a tag on him. So there's no tracking chip."
I had taken the little thing to the vets and pet smart. I had no clue where the actual vets office was, but I knew where this was.
"So it's a boy?"
The man in the blue shirt nodded at me.
"We can keep him here, take care of him and see if anyone wants him. If not here, then we'll take him to the vets office. See what they can do."
I tapped my foot for a moment. I was trying to decide what I wanted.
"Actually I take him with me. It would be no problem. I just need you to show me where I can get the right food and stuff..."
The man just looked me up and down.
"Would you like a crate?"
I shook my head no. Then we were on an adventure. The man helped me find the food. Blue Buffalo was what he recommended. A dog bed for the little thi by to grow in, toys, dog dishes, a leash, the dogs vaccinations, and he helped me get his tags and collar. Once I had paid for it all and left. I had gained a new member of my family.
I picked up a pizza on the way home, when I got home Liam was standing in front of the door to see me come in. His eyes were trained on me so he didn't see the little surprise by the corner.
"You were for 3 hours and 53 minuets. I finished your dinning room, living room, kitchen and your bed."
He raised his brows as I handed him a pizza.
"Um.... thank you. I'm sorry I was gone. I just had to deal with a.... a visitor. Yah a visitor."
I gave him a smile that he didn't take.
"What visitor?"
He asked me Sterling closer. I sighed. I pushed him back a little and walked to the side. He little puppy no longer behind the door.
Liam eyes went down and they went wide. I mean wide."I need some help bringing the dog stuff in. Can you help?"
He nodded.
"Sure, what's his name?"
I pet the dogs head.
"Alps Ally Holmes."
Liam looked at me and his eyes sadend. You could tell his face fell.
"You know it's almost her death anniversary."
I nodded my head.
"Yah. I know. I miss her too."
