"A supply run in the middle of the night?" I questioned. He didn't respond, just kept walking.
I wasn't dumb enough to pull any stunts so I followed him without hesitation.
It was pitch black outside; probably around midnight. The air was crisp and fresh, a complete contrast to the air inside the cell. The moon was still as bright as it was when I was running through the woods only a few hours ago.
We stopped by the house that I was escorted from.
"What are we doing here?"
He ignored my question and instead, hit me with, "If I come back here, and you ain't right where I left you, you'd better hope you never see me again."
I wanted to scoff at his boldness or hit him with a sarcastic remark, but I could tell that he wasn't exaggerating. I nodded and waited for him to come back.
When he did, it was with a small bag, most likely filled with water and food. There was a crossbow in his other hand. He pushed the bag into my arms and grabbed me by the wrist. I winced, my rib still incredibly sore.
"Let's go."
"I can walk myself. I'm not dumb enough to run off," I retorted. I was expecting him to keep his hand clamped around my wrist, but he let go.
—
He lead me to a corner of the walls where no one was keeping watch. He climbed up an empty watch tower and I followed close, nervous about what would happen if we were to get caught. I could tell he wasn't supposed to be leaving."What if we get caught?" I questioned as he ascended to the ground. I climbed down after him carefully, trying not to hurt myself anymore than I already had.
"We get caught," he mumbled as I jumped to the ground, clutching my side as I landed with a grunt.
"So we're not supposed to be out here," I pushed even further.
He just grunted and said, "we need supplies."
He failed to mention what type of supplies or where we would be getting them from."How far are we going because I'm tired as hell," I complained. After slamming into a tree and falling unconscious, going on a supply run was the last thing I wanted to be doing. I felt nauseous too; I probably had a concussion.
"Not far. If you need a break just let me know and we can stop for a minute," he assured. I was stunned; this was probably the nicest thing he'd said to me the entire time I'd spent with him.
"Yeah," I replied, not sure what else to say. Then it hit me.
"Since you didn't answer the first time, can I try again?"
He kept walking, but turned to face me.
"What?"
"What's your name?"
He rolled his eyes then turned back around. I could've screamed.
"Okay, I really don't get why you won't-"
"Daryl," he mumbled.
"Daryl," I repeated.
"Yeah."
"Okay, Daryl. Why are you bringing me with you to get supplies. You seem capable of getting them, yourself. Need me to protect you?" I teased. I needed to get this guy out of his shell or else I'd go mad.
"What I need is for you to be quiet," he retorted. He pulled his crossbow off his back and held it in front of him. He scanned the trees.
"What? Did you hear a deadhead?" I whispered.
"Maybe. Keep close, I don't need you gettin' bit," he told me as he pushed me behind him with his elbow.
"Hun, I think I'll be okay," I scoffed.
"Yeah, with a knife. But we both know that I ain't givin' you one so stay close," he repeated. I guess he had a point.
I was right behind him, to the point where I could smell him. He didn't reek, to my surprise. Maybe he does take showers semi regularly.
Pain radiated throughout my body as a set of teeth sunk into my shoulder. Daryl whipped around and shot at the deadhead. He threw his crossbow down as he pulled my shirt to the side, revealing bloody teeth marks.
