Chapter One

"Oh no, oh no, oh no." I kept thinking after I was dropped off at the police station.

My name Makenna Rose Lloyd. I'm 17, living in a run down apartment, and dancing for a living. When I say dancing I mean as a stripper at the most sleaziest strip club around. Play Time. Play Time was the only place that would pay me under the table. I've been doing this for about four months, since I ran away from my foster house.

"Your off lucky," said officer Peters. "This is your first offense, your under 18, and I understand what it's like to lose your parents. I'll let you off with a warning as long as you return to your foster parents. They have been notified of tonight's events, and are on their way. Please wait in the reception area for them."

I was dreading the moment Chris and Tracy Grahame, my foster parents, arrive.

Chris and Tracy have one son, Denis, on their own. He's 19. And three other kids from foster care. Josh 17, Billy 13, and Anna 6. I am the the oldest from foster and the only reason they kept me was for the checks.

Life with the Grahames was hell. Day after day I had to go to school, pick up Anna from her school, babysit everyone, go to work, cook dinner, and make sure the house is spotless, whilst taking perverted comments and actions from Denys and Josh.

Do you want to know where Chris and Tracy were doing? 'Working' from home, throwing house parties, and getting wasted.

'Ah, here they come now.'

"Rose, we missed you so much and we are very disappointed in you." Tracy said. "We will talk about this when we get you home. Thank you officer Peters for bringing her back."

In the corner of my mind, I saw an ageable woman, with a few graying hairs, checking us out.

As we were exiting the building she ran to the door.

"Hello, my name is Gwen. I heard that this young lady is in foster care. Would it be possible if I could adopt... What is your name?" Gwen said in a slight welsh accent. "Rose Makenna Lloyd." "If I could adopt Rose?"

My heart stopped just now for a moment.

"Of Course." Said Chris in a false kindly way, "Here is the agents' card. We can set up a meeting soon."

"This is fantastic. I'll be in contact soon. Rose, can I have a moment alone with you?"

"Okay..." This is unusual.

Once alone Gwen started.

"Well Rose, as you know my name is Gwen Bursnell, I'm 48, with one daughter Sabrina. She's 17 also. I am a maid, but would like another daughter. I won't force you into this, give me a call if you have second thoughts. Hopefully I will see you soon." Then Gwen proceeded to kiss both my cheeks and walk away elegantly, as I stared in a trance.

A loud and harsh voice suddenly pulled me back into reality.

"Don't you dare girl. You are coming back home with us, having your punishment dealt with, and making up for all the work you've missed," Said Chris.

The familiar ride to Chris and Tracy's house in Bellwood, Virginia is eerie quiet. A couple more minutes and we're there. Mixed feelings of dread and anger run through me, as I take in the everyday house.

Nothing has changed. Outside in still a beauty, lawn mowed, paint fresh, and lots of garden life around it. The interior is just as lovely as the exterior, with everything in it's place, nothing broken, and pictures hanging on the wall (who knew they had pictures). They must've hired a house keeper.

Mark takes me to his office to talk.

By talk I mean him drone on and on about how irresponsible, idiotic, and trashy I am for running away and working in a strip club. My verdict is going back to school, taking over Miranda, the housekeeper, job, and full time watching Anna.

Okay, this is weird. For the first ever, Mark cut me some slack.

Keeping Anna in line should be easy because she basically worships the ground I walk on.

Something is not right.
