My phone starts ringing as i walk through the front door, i check for the number as i try to juggle holding my school bags, guitar and amp. Today had been more than a loaded day. I check the number and its unknown and out of state. At this point i was extremely exhausted and couldn't fathom  picking up the phone but somehow the planets aligned and my last functioning braincells decided to work together to pick up the phone.

"hello?" my raspy voice cracks.

"hi is this Kali?" a friendly female voice on the other side of the call asks.

"depends on who's asking". i walk to the kitchen to get blueberries thinking this is probably another telemarketing company.

"Well I'm Lauren from The CW" I sit up on the kitchen island as my face starts to contort from confused to shocked all the way to borderline gasping with my nostrils flared. "We would just like to inform you that you have gotten the role you auditioned for and that we will be in further contact with you".

I hit my leg against the cabinet and it fucking hurt. Yep a cheesy moment but definitely not a dream. "thank you so much" i try to say with contempt but just sound like i have the hiccups.

i hang up the phone and basically leap off the counter, run to the couch and flop on to my back giggling out of joy but also sighing with relief. i didn't have to lie to Andrea anymore. Well at least not for too much longer.

My mom walks in after work and i try to sneak up to my room before she gets suspicious of who I was on the phone to or why I was so giddy

"Hey" I look down at her from halfway up the stairs frozen in my tracks by her booming voice
She looks at me and scoffs "Hello Mother, How was your day mother?, oh it was fine Kali thank you for asking" she says waving her arms around mocking me for not being 'polite' and asking how she was.

I repeat back to her what she just said in a half robotic tone. "Thank you" she scoffs. "What are you so rushed to go do upstairs anyway?" She asks as she walks over to the island to make herself a martini, I follow behind reluctantly but I know she will either find out what's up through me or through invading my privacy. I'd rather give her the illusion of receiving all of the information directly from the source than find her later sifting through my underwear draw looking for any information she can get her paws on.

"I um, Igot the role" I say once we reach the island.
"Really?" I nod to her disbelief
"This is huge honey, I mean we're going to have to tell everyone on the street, oh and all my Facebook friends, Donna is gonna go wild when my shining star of a daughter outshines her gluten free brownie recipe on the Moms group".

I nod along kinda zoning out, I never really was able to connect with my mum too well. We just never really had much in common, she was the perfect suburban middle child growing up, forever being popular and then taking over the family business when she was old enough. I was a d grade student at best with low self esteem and daddy issues.

I barely even look like her, I mean Botox isn't genetic but even if it was I still wouldn't look like her. She was a red head, I was brunette. She was pale ish, I was tan ish. I had a big nose which she probably passed down to me but who can tell these days.

I start to come back to reality and she's still talking, my hearing starts coming in at the end of her sentence.
".....with karen. Oh and we are going to have to have a going away party for us".

"I'm sorry" I try to re hear what she just said "Going away party for us?" I question. "Well I'm not just leaving without saying goodbye to all the moms, I'm very established here you know, I need to leave a lasting impression" she says while typing on her phone, probably already booking a caterer. "Mom, I'm going to Vancouver by myself" I say trying not to be too loud in the war path of the machine that is my mother. She just shifts her eyes up from her phone but still stays in the position she is in.

"No your not" she scoffs and then looks back down at her phone and continues doing whatever it was she was doing on it before.
"Yes I am" I stand my ground.
"No you are not" she says now moving her head but her body still in the leaning position, hands still clutching her phone.
"Why not then?" I ask

"Because I said so" she says in the same tone little kids do when they copy what you say but in a nagging voice. She takes her margarita and walks away

This is what I never understood about my mother. She gave such a strong illusion to the outside world that she was the kindest, most involved motherly person. But If something doesnt go her way all of a sudden it's like she goes all Freaky Friday on me and becomes a child in a grown ass woman's body. Most of the time its like I am looking after someone else's bratty, ungrateful child. But that's how manipulation works I guess. She may be saying no now, but once she realises there's nothing in it for her she will let me leave. All else fails I run away to Vancouver with Andrea
