The moon was rising as you made your way through the corridors of the castle. Not even a minute ago, a maid had rushed in with the terrible news.
"His majesty has collapsed! We don't know how long he will hold up!"
You could already feel the tears forming in your eyes. Your father had always had poor health. Some said it was a miracle he lived this long. You always dismissed the rumors of his limited time. You had hoped your father would live to see your accomplishments he always believed that you could do.
Unlike the others in the kingdom, your father welcomed you for who you have always been. He listened and smiled gently whenever you talked to him about the cute boys you would see in a day. He supports your decision to wear makeup and even bought you the newest trending products whenever you had a chance. He was all you could have hoped for in a father.
Breathing heavily, you made your way into your father's chambers. He lay on the bed, his chest only making the slightest of movements. The doctors watched on the side, doing nothing. My sister was on one side of his bed.
"Why are you all just standing there?! Help him!" You cried out, rushing to your father's side. The doctors shook their heads and looked mournfully at the king.
"There is nothing more we can do for the king. I'm sorry your majesty, but these are his last moments." They had both sadness and pity in their eyes.
You knelt by your father's side, grasping his hands. He shifted as well as he could to see you.
"My son... My time is nearing its end." He struggled with every word.
"Father... " Your tears were flowing freely now, clutching his hand like it was your way of keeping him alive.
"I have loved you so much my son, please do not cry for me. I knew that my time was limited. I was happy to be with you and your siblings until the very end. " He wheezed, "My only wish is for you to live happily. My only regret is not seeing you walk down the aisle."
You grinned painfully through the tears, giving a small laugh, "You had always said that you would find the greatest tailors in the land to make my dress." Your father smiled and nodded before beginning to speak again.
"I'm afraid that you will have to do that on your own my dearest son. I hope you will forgive me."
"I would never put any blame on your father, there would be no need for forgiveness." You sobbed placing your head near his. Your father exhaled before kissing your forehead.
"I can feel it. My time is run out. Please do not dwell on this my son. I will always be here with you. I have already said my goodbyes to your sister. If only your brother were here..."
You sobbed openly as you clutched his hand as he slowly lost his life. Had you were not in grief, you would have wondered exactly why your brother was not here...
You found out in the middle of the night. After your father had passed, you have been pulled away from your father from the doctors and escorted into your room. As the moon rose into the sky, you have cried yourself to sleep, clutching to your pillow.
It was around twilight that you were shaken awake. Standing above you was your friend, technically personal maid, Robin. She was frantic and was dressed up in her most durable clothes.
"Your majesty! Please wake up!" She whispered urgently.
"What is it Robin? Can I not sleep?" You sat up, eyeing her.
"Your brother... He threw your sister into jail! I was walking down the hallway when I saw the guards dragging her away. I overheard he was planning on taking you next after they finish with her. We have got to hurry!"
You trusted Robin. She had never lied to you before, and she was always loyal. You knew her words rang with truth as well. Your brother was always sly and power-hungry, but you never expected this.
You bolted out of bed and rummaged through your stuff. Robin helped you into your most plain riding clothes and put on your riding cloak, with you lending her your spare. It pained you that your brother would not even allow you to grieve.
From your dresser, you grabbed a dagger, embezzled with your family seal and a gift from your father when you turned of age. You also grabbed a sack of gold which was kept for emergencies. You never expected to use it.
"Let's go. " You said, already making your way out of the door. Robin began following you, snuffing out her candle and giving her and you the disguise of darkness.
"Through this passageway, it's the only one I'm sure my brother does not know about." You twisted across the tall hallways and pushed a part of the wall and revealed a hidden passageway.
It was small and dusty due to disuse and lack of cleaning, but you and Robin steadily traveled along the path until you came across the end.
The moon was slowly descending, as you and Robin made your way to the stables.
You urgently made your way to your prized horse. Starshine looked at you softly, nuzzling your shoulder. You saddled her as Robin saddled the horse next to you. Your heart was clenching as the two of you rode out of the stables, out into the countryside.
Sparing a glance back at the castle, you knew without help you would never return. Many thoughts were swimming around your head. Thoughts of your now dead father, or your sister now confined to a jail cell, and your brother with an insatiable hunger for power.
