The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
Emeralds from mountains and thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life

-I'll Be by Edwin McCain

Derek and I were in the driveway of my house playing basketball, freshman year was starting tomorrow and Derek planned on trying out for the team.

"Tell me again why you couldn't practice with Peter?" I asked standing in the middle of the driveway sweat dripping down my face and trying to catch my breath.

"Because I need to practice with someone human since that's who I'll be playing against. If I practice with Peter all the time I'll get even better and then I might as well just play by myself, because no one will hold a candle to me." Derek responded with a cocky smirk on his face. I rolled my eyes, but perked up at the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. My mom was supposed to be home from her hunt today to help get things ready for my birthday next weekend. I was going to be 14.

Derek and I exchanged confused looks however when a sheriff car pulled in instead of my mom. I turned hearing the front door close and saw my dad walking down to stand next to me.

"What'd you do now, kid?" My dad asked with an amused smile on his face. I scowled at Derek as he laughed at my father's joke.

"Nothing! I've been on my best behavior." My dad snorted.

"You told me you were going to be on your best behavior the day you choke slammed that poor kid at the park." I scoffed.

"He was 15 and he was picking on Scott!" My dad laughed and placed a hand on my head ruffling my hair. The sheriff's deputy stepped out of the car and headed towards us. I recognized him as my nephew Scott's friend's dad. Ironically he was also the one that brought me home from the park on the day my dad was referring to.

As Deputy Stilinski approached he sent a small smile to Derek and I.

"Noah." My dad greeted reaching out a hand to shake Noah's.

"Hey Jake. I uh." He glanced at Derek and I causing me to narrow my eyes. "Why don't you step this way so I can talk to you really quick." My dad glanced to me and then to Derek. He sighed.

"You might as well just tell me right here. These two have a way of finding things out whether you want them to or not." I smirked at Derek, it paid to have a best friend with super hearing. The deputy sighed.

"Alright. I'm really sorry to have to do this, but I wanted you to hear it from me seeing as our families are close." A knot began to form in my stomach at the man's tone of voice.

"There was an accident just inside the county line." My heart dropped and my hands began to shake. I felt Derek grab ahold of my hand and I squeezed clinging to it for dear life.

"What happened?" My dad asked voice hard.

"We're not sure. It appears as if she lost control or maybe fell asleep, but she ran off the road and hit a telephone pole. When the wires dropped, they sparked a fire in the tank. The body was burned beyond recognition, but her ID and such were untouched in the glove box. I'm sorry Jake, but Tonya's passed."
