Blossoms

Sometimes those weird things happen. The things that make you wonder if its it not just coincedence, but fate. The things that make you smile because its so ridiculously, amazingly, wonderfully absurd. That's how I feel right now as I gape at the sudden blooming flowers on the cherry tree in the school field.

Its the middle of freaking winter. How on earth is this even possible?

The pink flowers stand out against the white snow.

"Tavin, would you please pay attention?" the teacher demands impatiently.

"Uh, right." I reply distractedly, "its just that there are flowers...."

"Right. Now pay attention." she says sharply.

"Sorry." I mutter. She stalks back up to the front of the classroom. I steal one more glance at the tree, then focus on the math the teacher is writing on the board.

I shuffle my feet through the thick snow, pulling my phone out of my pocket. I'll probably never see something like this again, so I might as well get a picture.

As I snap the photo, I realize I see a small bit of dark blue in the tree.

I move a little to the left, trying to get a better view. Then I gasp.

Its a girl.

She seems to be sleeping in the blossoming branches. she is wearing a navy blue parka, black jeans, white boots, and a white beanie.

"U-um.... Hi?" I call.

Her eyes flutter open, and she turns her head. Unfortunately, as she does so, she loses her balance on the branch, falling from the tree with a shriek.

I wince as she hits the powdery snow.

She jumps up, pointing at me. I suppose she's trying to look menacing, but the light dusting of snow on her hair and clothes damper the effect.

"State your business!" she yells.

"Uhhhhh.... I was just looking at the tree...." I reply hesitantly. I notice that her finger is shaking violently, as is the rest of her body.

"Hey how long have you been out here? Your shivering. You could get sick out in the cold."  I say.

"I'm fine." She answers, wrapping her arms around herself.

I sigh. What is it with girls saying what they don't mean?

"Look, why don't you come to my house? You can warm up there, then be on your merry way."

"Really?"

I nod. I know its not really a good idea to bring a complete stranger into my home, but it what else am I supposed to do? Leave her to freeze? I don't think so.
