The moon edged its way above the horizon, casting a flood of silvery light over the grassy hollow where a young dark tortoiseshell she-cat with warm amber eyes, stood. Blinking in the gentle rays, she glanced around and tried to work out where she was. She recognized the border stream and she headed through WindClan territory, keeping close to the lakeshore. The young she-cat sensed that a bit of rain of was coming; a damp wind still gusted across the lake, through now and then a few watery rays of dull light managed to break out.
But she soon felt a new presence appearing a few mouse-lengths away from her. She sniffed the air and recognized the scent of the cats who lives in the pine forest. She turned around and saw a well-muscled and thick-furred black she-cat with piercing green eyes that seemed to look into her soul. She was glowing in a silvery-moon glow as if lit from within.
"Come." ordered the black cat as she singling the tortoiseshell she-cat to follow her towards the horseplace.
"Wait!" cried out the dark tortoiseshell she-cat, she bounded past the glowing she-cat and stood in front of her. Her green eyes were brilliant, her whiskers and tail twitched with excitement. "Who are you? And how do you know who I am?"
"My name is Tall Shadow," said the glowing cat as she passed the tortoiseshell she-cat. "Now come with me."
The dark tortoiseshell she-cat twitched her whiskers irritated and skeptical about following a cat she hardly knew, but she did anyways.
But as the two cats made their way alongside the horseplace, their ears twitched at an ominous barking sound.
Something's coming our way! The tortoiseshell she-cat as she ruffled her fur with alarm and crouched down, letting her belly-fur brushed against the dewy grass.
"Calm yourself, it's all in a vision." soothed Tall Shadow.
The tortoiseshell she-cat nodded, but still nervous. Around the same time, it started to become blurry with blue-gray rain pouring from the rain clouds. She suddenly perked up when she saw a sleek figure of a cat ran out of a covered hole that's usually attached to a network of underground tunnels that goes underneath the lake.
Suddenly, the tortoiseshell she-cat and Tall Shadow both saw that the figure of the cat was a pretty silver tabby she-cat with flashing blue eyes, twitching ears that twitched to every direction of every sound of the forest, and strong smell of dirt and prey was on her fur. But in her mouth, she gently carried a mewling and wiggling silver she-kit.
The tortoiseshell she-cat noticed that the silver queen and her kit didn't reacted to their approach — the cats couldn't see her nor her, which is quite calming.
They were outside, cold and wet by the rain that was being poured down on them. Their fur became heavy and soaked with rain. Tall Shadow and the tortoiseshell she-cat both started following the silver she-cat and her kit.
The silver she-cat had already lost most of her litter from the dogs and now the two of them were chasing her and her kit for some reason with hunting dogs. But she won't let that misfortune hurt her only kit.
The silver she-cat tightened her jaws on the kit's scruff at the thought. She came into a wet stop into a wet puddle, her eyes flashed briefly when she saw the pine forest that she was heading towards. The tortoiseshell she-cat realized that the silver queen and her kit couldn't see her or Tall Shadow.
Sure, she may or may not have heard tales about cats living in the wilderness and that they chewed on bones from the animals that they had fought and defeated, but in the undergrowth forest the cats that called themselves "ThunderClan" took pity on Daisy and her kits more than a few moons ago and took them in.
The she-cats remembered what Jacques and Susan had warned them about them, after all the silver she-cat was Susan's sister.
They had picked on a young tom cat from the pine forest, she warned them to be careful but when they killed the tom two groups of very different cats came in and taught them a lesson.
The she-cat that the cats in the pine forest called themselves "ShadowClan" can take care of her kit.
There was straight, evenly spaced trees. The forest floor was smooth, dotted here and there with wet brambles and rutted occasionally with ditches, and the ground was soaked and the ditches were filled in with water.
Pines stretched into the distance, their thick canopy blocked out most of the rain and made it even darker. Countless moons' worth of fallen needles made the ground feel springy beneath their paws.
But then they heard barking somewhere behind them, the silver queen found a small and well-hidden den with leaves and bushes covering it.
The silver she-cat crouched down and put her kit in the warm and dry den, the kit looked up with sleepy blue eyes and gave a tiny mewl. The silver queen closed her eyes briefly to hide her tears, but she reopened her blue eyes. The tortoiseshell she-cat also felt close to crying as she watched the separation of the silver queen and her kit.
The silver queen struggled a sigh and her eyes to hide her tears from her kit, she finally looked down and started nuzzling her kit, the two of them were both exchanging their scents.
After a while, the silver queen ran away from the den and towards the fox traps on ThunderClan border with three angry dogs hot on her tail.
What a brave queen she is, thought the tortoiseshell she-cat sadly but proudly.
"Now what?" asked the tortoiseshell she-cat softly and sadly.
Tall Shadow flicked her tail back at the kit. "Watch."
The two moon old kit kept quiet she didn't scented her mother, the dogs, or the twolegs.
But when she scented cats with a strong scent of pine sap, pines, and prey. She started mewling desperately for food and someone to care for her. Clever kit! thought the tortoiseshell she-cat proudly. Then a strong and broad-shouldered black and white tom came with a dark brown tabby tom with bright amber eyes, a younger and sleek yellow she-cat, a cream-furred she-cat, a young and plump white she-cat with black ears, a broad-shouldered white tom, and a young and handsome black tom came into view. Their pelts were sleek and wet, their whiskers had a few a rain drops.
"Hey look Crowfrost." said the young black tom as he came into the den.
He looked down at the kit and the kit looked up at him. The tom has glowing deep green eyes, like two glowing deep green leaves, and the leader of the patrol stepped forward.
"Let's take her in." said the tortoiseshell she-cat with green eyes.
The she-cat bend down and picked up the kit by the scruff.
"Okay, but if her mother comes back we will give it to her." said Crowfrost gruffly.
That's something at least, figured the tortoiseshell she-cat.
As they walked away, the tunnel opened into a clearing that was surrounded by thick brambles. Low, wet branches hung over the camp, and a large rock stood at one end. Tall Shadow, the tortoiseshell she-cat, and the silver kit saw more shadowed and wet figures of the ShadowClan cats, they moved around the edges, where scrubby grass sprouted beneath the trailing brambles. Pines stretched overhead, the thick canopy blocked out most of the rain and made the camp even darker. There was also a few boulders and lowered branches.
The cats' eyes glowed amber, blue, yellow, and green with hidden emotions and gazes from all over the camp. The kit let them stare and gave them a curious look.
Then a strong and lithe ginger tom with sharp green eyes and strong limbs came on top of a lowered branch.
"Where did you find that the kit?" asked the tom.
His voice was strong with authority and strength.
"The kit was left in the old fox's den," said Crowfrost. "We're not sure who she belongs to."
The tom jumped down and sniffed the kit, the kit mewed and swat a paw on top of the leader's nose.
"This kit is very strong, proud, and clever." commented the tom with touch of fatherly warmth.
The tom turned to the den that didn't have any brambles and had a strong smell of fresh herbs.
"Littlecloud, anything about a stray kit?" called the tom.
The cat called Littlecloud was a shivering tabby tom with tired pale blue eyes and a feverish expression came from the den, he looked into the kit's healthy blue eyes.
"The kit would bring a good fortune to ShadowClan, Rowanstar." rasped Littlecloud.
The leader picked the kit up and brang her to a nursery. In the den lay two she-cats, one was a speckled gray she-cat with dark blue eyes. She was being a mother to a beige-gray tom-kit, a golden she-kit with black spots, a speckled brown-gray tom-kit, and a sleek dark gray tom-kit.
On the far side of the den was a heavily pregnant white she-cat who was fast asleep, so was the kits but the speckled gray she-cat had woken up and her dark blue eyes were on the kit.
"Rainheart." said the tom as he put the kit down by the sleeping kits.
"This kit had been abondand by her mother and I need you to take care of her." said Rowanstar.
Rainheart purred and nosed the kit closer.
"It will be my honor, Rowanstar." purred Rainheart softly, she nuzzled her nose through the kit.
"What's the pretty kit's name?" asked Rainheart.
Rowanstar turned around and saw a bit of moonlight coming through the canopy. Most of that moonlight shimmered on to the kit's pelt, making her pelt shine like the silvery moonlight or the moonlight shining on the lake. He thought he saw two faint and fading, starlit cats, they nodded with sparkling eyes before they disappeared.
"Her name is Moonkit." whispered Rowanstar hoarsely.
"That's a perfect name for her." murmured the tortoiseshell she-cat.
"Yes, but the reason I have called you is that I want you and your littermates watch over Moonkit. Her heart will wander but she'll needs help finding her way home." said Tall Shadow.
"Who's the father of Moonkit?" asked tortoiseshell she-cat.
"Darktail." said Tall Shadow before she started fading away. "Keep her heart in the light for she has a great destiny spread out before her."
"I will." whispered the she-cat.
With a jolt, the dreaming tortoiseshell she-cat awoke. The first thing she felt was the weight of the small she-kit sleeping in the curve of her belly. She lifted her head and blinked into the darkness, her heart and mind silent. The kit whimpered and fidgeted, having a dream of her own.
She wondered, for a moment, if her foster kit was having a the similar dream.
"Rest, my dear." The tom leaned and soothed the kit with soft and gentle laps of her tongue. Her dream lingered, unsettling her. Keep her heart in the light for she has a great destiny spread out before her. . . The black she-cat's promising words stuck in her mind. She tried to tell herself it means nothing. And yet she couldn't stop thinking it was important.
But she recognized the silver queen anywhere, since she and her group are a exiled group of friendly rogues. The silver queen was Mistcloud, and her kit Moon. Mistcloud was once Darktail's beloved mate before he became dark and vengeful. She soon secretly gave birth with her twolegs, but rumor soon has it that two of her six kits were wounded by the dogs at the horseplace and she ran away with her only kit that her twolegs didn't took away.
Anyways, she'd been dreaming of the bramble-covered clearing before with the same starry-furred cat, and most of her dreams keeps happening in real life since she was a kit. She wondered if it meant something. As the kit quieted and relaxed once again into deep sleep, the she-cat stared into the starry night. Dreams are just dreams. Probably. She unsheathed her claws and scarred the ground. This dream had felt too real to be ignored.
