You think life is simple, then you find out that it's the most complex thing you'll ever deal with. It's just so fragile. No one knows what's going to happen, or what might change in your life. My friends and I had our lives changed by a simple mistake.
The school day ended, and my friends, Damian and Trent, and I were walking to our normal hangout spot. "So how's your arm, Fang?" I turned to look at Trent, quite possibly the smartest of us all, and shrugged. "It's getting better, but it's not gonna be fully healed for another couple of months." I shifted my backpack to move the weight off my bad shoulder. "Go to a doctor to check it out. The last thing you need is a shattered arm." When we arrived to our hangout spot, a giant hole where a single tree grew in the center of and decorated to be our secret hideout, Trent dropped his stuff onto the floor. "God, the teachers we have just love to make our lives Hell." Damian nodded in agreement as he played catch with himself, or at least tried to. "Always making us carry these textbooks, constantly giving us homework, day in and day out. It's ridiculous!" As he tossed the ball in his hands into the air, it hit him on the head when it fell back down. "Ow! Stupid...."
"Careful, Damian. You want to keep your face intact, right?" I chuckled as I sat down on one of the chairs we placed. If it wasn't obvious, we're all a little deficient in a certain skill. Trent was weak hearted, Damian lacked hand-eye coordination, and I had very badly injured arms. We were known as the Useless Crew, and no one ever let us live that name down. That's kinda how we became friends too, and I find that ironic.
As we spent about an hour listening to our music, watching some YouTube videos, and just generally wasting our time, The sun began to drop down below the horizon. "Well, it's about time we got home guys. We have another day of crap to deal with, tomorrow." Damian stood up and stretched his arms and legs. Trent slowly stood up, and grabbed his stuff. "I really don't want to deal with schoo, but we have to, right?" I sighed and nodded. Before we could leave, we heard a car zoom past. Normally, cars didn't drive on this highway and when they did, it was for either trying to escape cops or trying to get away from gangs. But this time was different. No one was chasing this car, but that's how the drive drove. Something fell out of the back of his car, and we went to check it out. Damian tried getting the driver's attention, but his attempts were in vain. The driver was already gone by the time we got to whatever he dropped. "What is it?" Damian hovered over my shoulder, as I kneeled down to pick up the glass container. Weird... it was like some kind of melted plastic, or some kind of weird goop matter. Whatever it was, it jumped like a spider as we looked closer at it. We all jolted our heads back, and looked around. "Dude. Let's keep it." Damian chuckled as he took the container from my hands. Trent shook his head in annoyance. "First off, don't snatch things from other people." Trent took the glass container into his own hands. "Second, we have no idea who this belongs to, or what the hell it even is. So keeping it is an absolute horrible idea." Trent put the container in our little hideout. "We'll leave it here for now, and pick it up tomorrow. If the driver comes back looking for it, we can return it to him.
"Come on, Trent! Think about it! What if this thing gives us some kind of cool skills and powers?? That'd be pure awesomeness, man! You don't just find something like this, and slam the door in oppurtunity's face!" Damian was exclaiming how this... thing could benefit us if we let it free, and use it.
"This isn't one of your stupid hero comics, Damian!" Trent hit Damian in the back of the head. "This thing could be dangerous, and quite possibly KILL us!" Trent was always the voice of reason in our group, whenever one of us had a bad idea. That was rather often and it was mostly Damian's ideas. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my stuff. "Come on guys, it's almost 7. Let's get home, already." And with that, we took out leave of our little hideout spot. But what happened the day after was what really started our string of bad luck.
