CHAPTER 2

“Andy, what dress should I go for? The black with red or the pink one?” Becca asked, holding them up to her chest.

“The black and red one.” I said while checking my phone once more.

We have been at Becca’s house for 3 hours now and I’m completely bored out of my mind. She’s been trying to find a dress to wear to the dinner at Dylan’s house. I picked mine out a while ago. She’s so worried about what Gabe will think of her.

“Becca, will you hurry up? We have a half hour to meet my parents there and we have to walk since someone was stupid enough to not get her brother to drive us!”

Becca gave me a sheepish smile and then went into the bathroom to put on her dress. I stood up and looked at myself in her mirror. I had a knee length purple dress on. I scowled. Dinner to the Crenshaw’s meant a freaking buffet and ball. I would have to dance with Dylan along with a whole bunch of strangers who insisted on asking me to dump Dylan and to accept their marriage proposals. I sighed. The disadvantage of having the most powerful wizard as your ancestor.

“Andy, could you have at least tried to do something with your hair?”

Becca appeared behind me in the mirror. She took my wet and curly out of its messy bun and let the frizziness cascade down my shoulders. She combed through my curly locks and then put it into a side fishtail braid. She left my side bangs alone, claiming that they were ‘decently cute enough’. Wow my best friend sure helps my self esteem.

Becca grabbed her three inch heels and frowned. Let me just explain to you now that Becca is tiny. By tiny, I mean, stick thin, short, and small boned. If she had short hair, she could seriously resemble a pixie.

“Geez these heels will not get me anywhere close to Gabe’s height. Andy, you think that you could-?” Becca began. I took out my wand and cut her off.

“Est duo digitis magis altitudo quod quaerere. Mauris tincidunt erat nec tibi placeas.” (It is two inches more height for which I seek. Please allow or I will be meek.)

The heels began to expand and change color. See, each wizard and witch receives a spirit color at birth. Whenever a wizard or witch enchants something, that item changes to that color. I was one of the rare witches who had two colors. Becca’s heels were now silver and purple and instead of three inches, they were now five. It was beginner magic, but an exercise none the less.

“Thanks Andy. Oh, what would I do without you?” She asked while gazing at the shoes.

“You wouldn’t be able to touch the top of Gabe’s head.” I replied.

She threw a pillow at my head, but I luckily saw it coming and ducked. She then rolled her eyes at me while I stuck out my tongue out at her. She got on her shoes and I gave her a bewildered expression.

“You’re going to walk all the way there in your heels?” I asked.

“Well, I was actually hoping that you could possibly, maybe, sort of, flash us in there.” She said while giving me a cheesy smile.

“Becca, do you realize how much trouble I could get in? If the neighbors see us flash in front of the house that could reveal my wizardry and my parents would kill me.” I said.

“C’mon, Andy, please? I doubt that anyone will notice.” She replied.

I sighed. The only thing that was compelling me to consider this was that Dylan’s house was kind of far from here. It was also the fact that I wouldn’t be able to handle Becca’s incessant whining. I put on my shoes, grabbed my wand with one hand, and grabbed Becca’s hand with the other.
