When Winn showed Annabeth the first set of five books, she thought she had enough. But then he pulled out another stack of five books and began to ramble on about the giant war that Annabeth really did not want to remember. Winn had started rambling about a book called The Mark of Athena. She didn't have to guess twice to know what happens there.
"-and then the author had the decency to make the biggest cliffhanger in the entire world. He ended the book right after you and Percy fell into-"
"Don't say it." Annabeth cut him off. Her voice had a certain edge to it. "These books make me sick."
"Oh," Winn responded in a small voice. "I'm sorry, it's just that you were my favorite character and now you're here and I'm just fanboying. I didn't realize all the bad memories this would bring up."
"It's fine," Annabeth lied. These books just made her think more about Percy who she missed dearly. Once again, he was taken away from her, or rather she was taken from him. They had been separated once before and another couldn't bare.
"Hey, um, Annabeth?" said Supergirl, Kara, as she flew into the main room. Annabeth looked over at her questioningly. "How about you get some fresh air. You haven't seen the city yet, and besides, I know exactly how you feel. Stranded in this new world, introduced to knew things. Oh they also have great coffee." Annabeth smiled.
"Coffee," she agreed.
"Coffee," agreed Kara.
********************
Annabeth watched the bustling people through the Noonan's window. Her trail of thought was interrupted by Kara's voice.
"So, if you don't mind me asking..." started Kara. The two doppelgängers fell into an easy conversation after that. They discussed a range of things from love lives to saving the world. Annabeth's stressed demeanor slowly faded as she conversed with the alien. However, her relaxation was short lived.
Through the Noonan's window Annabeth caught a glimpse of a man standing on the other side of the street. He was staring right at her. None of the mortals walking past him seemed to notice him and this put up a red flag in Annabeth's mind. Kara noticed her change in behavior.
"What's wrong?" She asked. Her eyebrows scrunched together.
"Come with me," said Annabeth frantically. She stood up, grabbed Kara's wrist without an explanation and rushed out of the coffee shop. Annabeth dragged Kara outside but when she looked to see where the man was he was gone.
"What in Hades?" mumbled Annabeth to herself.
"Ok what was that?" questioned Kara as she dusted her skirt and adjusted her glasses.
"There was a man - there!" Annabeth yelled. She noticed him standing in an alleyway. Annabeth ran across the street, barely managing to not get run over by honking cars. The man stared directly into her eyes as she quickly approached him. Annabeth was so intently chasing after this man that she ended up running into a young woman on the sidewalk.
"Oof! Oh my gods I'm so sorry ma'am," exclaimed Annabeth as she tried to help the woman up.
"It'ssssss alright, Annabeth dear," crooned the woman. She stood up and smiled sweetly at the frantic demigod. Annabeth froze.
"How do you know my name?" she questioned. The young woman's smile widened.
"Why, you don't know?" said the woman in a sickly sweet voice. "Hmph. It'ssssss better that way ssssssssweetheart." The woman's legs then turned into two snake trunks but before she could pounce, Annabeth swiftly stabbed her with her drakon bone sword. Golden dust rained from where the Scythian Dracaena stood.
Kara ran up to Annabeth from behind.
"What in Rao was that?" she asked.
"A Scythian Dracaena. One of the many Greek monsters. But I have no idea how it's here and it's driving me crazy!" shouted Annabeth. Kara frowned, not knowing how to help. Annabeth sheathed her sword and kicked the golden dust on the ground. The mortals didn't even spare a glance at her.
"Hey, Annabeth, this might be a bad time, but there's a weird dude staring at you," commented Kara. Annabeth's head shot up. She nearly forgot about the man on the street. She looked in front of her and noticed that he was at the entrance of the alleyway. Annabeth watched as he disappeared behind the brick wall.
Annabeth chased after the man into the alleyway, but when she got there she skidded to a halt.
The man was gone.
The alleyway was a dead end and a ten foot wall marked the end. There was no way that man could've scaled the wall in seconds flat. Kara came running in a few seconds later.
"I knew your world was weird but I didn't expect it to be this weird," said Kara to herself. "Wait, hang on," she said much louder. "Why is there Kryptonian writing on this wall?!" she demanded.
"So that's what it was. There's Ancient Greek too. The man must've led us here."
Annabeth read the message and her eyes widened.
"The Kryptonian writing says 'Hover through the fog and filthy air.' What the hell is that supposed to mean?" asked Kara.
"Oh this is not good. Not good at all," said Annabeth to herself. Her hands were shaking.
"Why? What does the Greek writing say?"
"Fair is foul, and foul is fair," stated Annabeth.
"Hover through the fog and filthy air," continued Kara.
