Jane POV
"I needed a bit of a break, so I thought I'd come say hi."
I hoped he didn't work in communications. I wasn't sure I'd be able to get any work done with a face like that hanging around.
"I'm Jane," I said, extending a hand.
He shook it, and his grip was warm and firm. "Peter."
It took me a moment for it to sink in. When it did, my eyes went wide. Surely he couldn't mean...?
"Peter Bricks."
Oh. He did.
My face turned red, and I tried to reign in the anxiety that hit me like a cannonball to the chest.
"Mr. Bricks," I said. "It's great to meet you."
He released my hand. "You as well," he said. "Are you liking it here so far?"
I scrambled for words to say, but the chocolatey tone of his voice had me completely undone. In his eyes there was a sense of mischief, as if he knew the effect he was having on me, but was happy to watch me flounder in it.
"Yes," I said finally. "It's..good."
Good? I couldn't think of a better word to say than good? Oh god. For someone who worked in communications, I was completely inept as a communicator.
"Good," he repeated, the ghost of a smile on his lips. "I think we can endeavor to make your experience a little more than just good."
Was that flirtation in his voice? Was he flirting with me? That wasn't possible, right?
"I—uh—sorry," I said. "It's been a busy day. I'm very excited to work here."
"Relax, Ms. Avon," he said. It was more like a purr.
I felt warmth spread through my limbs, and I couldn't remember the last time that anyone—or anything—had affected me in such a way.
"Anyways," he said, snapping me out of my reverie. "Back to the grind. I'm sure I'll see you around."
I managed a pitiful wave as he exited my office, then walked back to my chair and slumped down in it.
I was in so much trouble.
