The book dropped to the floor as Megan Thompson heard 8 words that would change her life forever. "If I had a gun I'd kill her." Laura Calustaff giggled with her friends as she spoke these strong words. "But you don't have a gun." muttered Thomas Stephenson. Megan smiled weakly at her best friend.
Megan wasn't exactly the best looking girl in her class. She didn't have time for make-up because she was reading all of the time. She was quite clever though. Her mother was an illustrator and her father owned a second-hand bookshop. She lived on books.
The bell rang to signal the end of the day. Thomas pushed his glasses up his nose and ran to catch up with Megan.
Thomas's favourite book was Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets. He didn't really like reading. But he liked Megan. As a friend. He preferred Maths and Science. Fact. Not fiction.
Megan walked quickly to the girls toilet. Tears formed in her dark brown eyes. She pulled her book up to her face. She didn't want another round of bullying from Laura.
Thomas ran through the crowds of people, chasing the spotty bag that belonged to his friend. He turned a corner. He'd lost her.
Little did he know that he had lost her forever.
