The drill sergeant walked in front of the line of cadets, inspecting them. "My name is Jonas, but you will not call me that, I will be known as drill sergeant and drill sergeant only. Is that understood cadets?"A feeble "sir yes sir." came from the line of men. "My grandma can yell louder than you boys and she's dead, I Said is that understood cadets?" This time, they spoke loud and strong. "Sir yes sir!" Jimmy Beckett couldn't help but smile. Unfortunately the drill sergeant took notice of him and called him out for it. "What are you smirking about bucket?" Obviously reading his name tag and making fun of his name. "It's Beckett-" "It looks like bucket to me!" It was the sergeant's turn to smirk. "So are you saying I'm wrong?" Jim couldn't think of what to say. "My name isn't-" "Yes or no cadet!" Jim decided he didn't want to be on this guy's bad side. "No sir." "That's what I thought, now there's one thing you boys need to know," the sergeant said, pacing back and forth, "I's that I am always right." "Now since Mr. Bucket here is such a smart ass, we're going for a run. A series of groans came from the line of men.
The cadets reluctantly fell in line behind the drill sergeant and ran off down the road. All the men kept up with Jonas for about two miles before slowing. "I'm not gonna have sissy's in my platoon soldiers, move!"
By the time the group was back, the sun had faded behind the trees east of the boot camp. "Get your sorry excuses of human beings to bed so I don't have to look at ya!" The sergeant yelled, walking off. The other cadets turned towards Beckett after sergeant Jonas was out of earshot. "Thanks for that bucket." A man with a long nose said walking towards him. "Hey come on ma-" "quiet Connor!" Long nose said, stepping closer and pushing Beckett. "Hey man I don't want any trouble I just-" stopping mid sentence to punch the boy in his unordinary large nose. Nose fell back stumbling. "Uh you're gonna pay for that." He said, swinging a roundhouse at Jimmy. Jim sidestepped and caught him in the temple. Nose threw a wild punch that hit Jim in the mouth making him stumble. He could He the other cadets cheering and booing all around him.
Nose recovered and faked a kick before hitting Beckett in the arm. Jim could feel the anger growing inside him. Finally he kicked Nose and he fell down. Nobody took notice of the woman walking up behind them beside the drill sergeant. "What is going on!" Suddenly the boys dispersed, showing the two fighting. Bucket! Why I oughta," the sergeant started towards them before the woman put her hand up and everyone fell silent. "Stop Jonas," she said, "We need fighters, not mindless drones. We need people who can think on their feet, not lying on the ground." "But ma'am, we need them to be able to follow orders." The sergeant said, as if he were talking about a dog. "Yes but they must be able to think for their own like I said before. Do better, or I will replace you. She said walking away. The drill sergeant turned towards Beckett and Nose, looking like he was gonna say something before turning away. Beckett turned towards Nose smiling. Nose turned towards him and smirked, heading off to the barracks. Man, Beckett thought. This is going to be fun.
