Chapter 1- Everything falls apart

"The task today is to research all about evolution, you all have until the end of the lesson to complete it"

"This will be fun, we'll get it done in no time" I smirked to Daniel, knowing full well he hates science.

Daniel complained "Very funny Alex, I'd rather be anywhere else right now, at least I'm with you."

"Daniel, do you want to go out after school to get something to eat? I have something I want to tell you" I asked nervously.

"Uh yeah sure, are you okay?" Daniel asked me with a worried look on his face.

"I'm fine, I just have something that I need to say"

"Alex and Daniel, stop talking and continue with your research before I make you stay after lesson"

"Sorry Mr Parker"

"So Alex, where do you fancy going to eat?"

"You remember the place where we first met?"

"How could I forget, you want to eat there? Wow you must have something really special you want to tell me" Daniel said with a huge smile on his face.

Little did he know that I'm about to tell him something that may change his whole mood. I want to take him to this cafe so that it may make it easier for what I'm about to say.

"So are we walking or getting the bus?"

"Let's walk, it's quite a nice day. Plus that way I get to spend more time with you." Daniel looked at me smiling, I blushed a little. He's always so nice to me and I'm about to change that, what am I doing.

We leave school and start down the road that takes us to where we want to go.

"So uh Alex, I have a question, what you're going to tell me, should I be worried?" Daniel asked curiously.

"Well, it's not anything bad but it could change things, I really hope it doesn't. I've discovered something quite a while ago and I've been wanting to tell you for so long and I just can't hold it in anymore, it's killing me." I began to feel really nervous now, Daniel notices how uncomfortable I've become so he grabs my hand and strokes the top of it with his thumb to stop me from shaking, it works for a while.

"Whatever it is you're going to tell me, it won't change anything between us, I love you Alex"

"I love you too Daniel" I smiled at him.

This is going to break him.

Daniel has liked me more than just a friend for a while now. He doesn't know that I know but I overheard him talking about it with his mum once when I stayed over at his place. I love him too but not in the way that he wishes. I wish that I could love him in that way to save him the pain and heartbreak that I am about to bring on him. I feel awful but I can't hide the truth from him anymore, it's gone on long enough.

We arrive to the cafe where we first ever talked to each other. I use to go there all the time whenever I felt sad, there was something about the place that always made me feel calm, maybe it's because it's right beside the sea. Daniel was alone too on that day, he came over to me to ask if I had change for £5. After he ordered his food he never left my table, we talked and talked for the rest of the day. Ever since he's never really left my side.

He opens the door and let's me go in first, I walk to the table that I always sit in because it's right next to the window with the view of the sea, it's so calm today. He follows me knowing exactly where I would go to sit.

"This has always been your favorite table Alex, maybe you should take it home." He laughs to himself. He's always been so funny.

"I'll go an order us our usual." He gets out of his chair and begins to walk to the queue.

"Daniel wait, can we talk first. I'm not sure I can eat right now." He sits back down on his seat and places his hand on mine, looking directly at me he says "Go ahead".

"Oh gosh, here we go... so Daniel as I told you before I have discovered something about myself and I no longer want to keep it from you." My heart beat begins to speed up. "A few years ago I began to feel different, well maybe I've always felt that way but never realised it before, what I'm trying to say is..."

"Oh my god, Alex, look! The sea it's going crazy, that's so strange, outside looks like a storm, just a moment ago it was perfectly calm."

I look outside and the sea is calming down, it looks as if the storm is over. "This is distracting me from what I was trying to tell you." I said quite angrily.

"Oh yes, Sorry, carry on. You were saying how you feel different"

"Daniel I... I.. I'm gay." I stare at him waiting for a reaction, waiting for him to say something.

"Daniel?"

He lets go of my hands that he had placed on mine "You, you're gay? But I.. I thought. I thought you were going to tell me that you like me Alex, I thought we had something. I finally thought that you were going to admit that you like me. How could you do this to me, you know that I love you. I'm Sorry, I can't be here right now I need to go." He stands up and rushes out.

I get up and chase after him "Daniel wait, please don't leave me, I still love you, you're my best friend." He doesn't turn back. I knew this was going to happen, why did this have to happen to us, I can't just lie to him. I sit back down where we first talked and potentially the last place we'll ever talk again and begin to cry.

My phone vibrates in my pocket, I instantly answer it hoping that it's Daniel. But it's not Daniel who answers, it's my father. "Alex come home right away, something terrible has happened."

"Dad, are you crying? What's happened?"

"Just come home." He hangs up the phone.

I run home and as I'm coming up to my house the place is surrounded by police. I walk into my door terrified about what I'm about to find out. There my mother is laying on the floor in her own blood and my father collapsed by her side. I feel my heart shatter into a million pieces and I drop to the floor, not knowing what to think or do.
